Money Moral Dilemma: If I sell the classic car my kids got me, should I give them their money back?

  • I agree, have a word with the children and offer them first refusal on the sale. That’ll give you the opportunity to discuss the reasons for the sale while informing them of your intentions.

    You were gifted the car.
It's yours to do whatever you wish.
If you want to share the money out with your kids, do it.
    There's no 'should' about it.

I would sell the car and let your family know the reason why, which is most probably one of two reasons, health or finance.Quite possibly they will help with one, especially as they have all shown how generous they can be.As for sharing the money.......use it to go on a bucket list holiday.

You were GIVEN a GIFT.  That means it is yours and you can choose what to do with it.  Hopefully your relationship with your children is such that they would not expect you to give them some return on what was freely given out of their affection for you.

It's your gift, you do with it what you want. Imagine giving someone a phone, and when they sell it, you ask for your money back!

    A gift is a gift

  • If this has been your only car, use the money to buy a suitable car that will fulfil your needs in the future. No family member could argue with this

If it was a gift it's your to do as you see fit. If they bought it on certain grounds, such as we will buy the car as long you take sue to school each day or your designated driver for then you have a verbal contract to upkeep

Kim has nailed it...  if the children clubbed together to buy the car, they must be adults so you can discuss it with them like adults.  If you can no longer manage to maintain and run it, say so.  If you're too creaky to get in and out of an older car, say so.  You've had pleasure from it - they already know this.  Sell it - buy something more suited and if you have any profit - maybe a family meal out to say thanks again.
I need to think of something new here...

    We don't have enough information!

How long have you had the car?

Has it lost or gained in value?

What condition is it currently in?

Do you need the money? if so, what do you need the money for?
If you don't need the money, what is your main reason for selling and what do you intend to spend the money on?

Finally ..WHY DON'T THESE PEOPLE TALK TO THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ABOUT THE PROBLEMS THEY HAVE WHICH INVOLVE THEM???
