Winter Wonders

Given the amount of spuds you have @Rhyddid2026, using potatoes is definitely OATing 😁
Part-used moisturiser was put on under normal spf moisturiser today, these minus degrees are definitely helping with the using up anything moisturising!
Cheese and crackers for dinner so using up a small bit of cupboard food
Have cashed out a little vinted amount so will put that towards build pot tomorrow
Today's winter joy was bothering to wear a pearl bracelet even though it was mostly hidden under layers. It made me smile to catch a glimpse of it throughout the day
I also had a good realisation about whether or not to book a dental check-up. I decided not to as there is not anything worrying me about my teeth and I'd rather put the money towards a more expensive dental hygienist appointment in a few months as they at least actually clean your teeth rather than charging you a ton of money to look in your mouth for five seconds and confirm that you still have teeth (I do like and respect my dentist, just not a week's essential groceries worth).
I would love to be a shiny tiptop person who doesn't feel the financial impact of doing all the appointments you're supposed to, but that is not my reality and I feel better for having decided that dentist is for necessary ouch, hygienist can be saved for6 -
Lol. I know what you mean. That is one of my to-do lists this year and join a dental plan rather than my current NHS dentist.PennysIntoPounds said:I also had a good realisation about whether or not to book a dental check-up. I went to a lovely Soundbath this evening which was very relaxing and very warm in the yoga studio. I almost got too warm in fact as I was wearing my big jumper with how chilly it has been.
I am going out tomorrow for a meet-up with some new people and I will treat myself to a new book and some new earrings on the way home.

I've been out for my 08.00 hospital appointment this morning (all good, regular monitoring scan) and plunged into the Sainsbugs for oranges on the way home. Apart from cat litter, this is the only shopping I wanted - just to keep my vitamin C levels up. Our OAT today is to try and fathom why the solar panels are not talking to the inverter - and haven't since the windows were cleaned just before Christmas. Judging by the water that was there after he had been, I don't think this chap had been told to leave the window above the battery. My money is on an inverter setting as we have two arrays, on different buildings and the chances of both stopping simultaneously seems unlikely to me, but what do I know!?Save £12k in 2025 #2 I saved £14,660.97 of £6000 or 244.35% of my target. The 2026 Save £12k in 2026 thread is here
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I finished the year at £2880.99/£3000 or 96.03% of my annual spend so I am sticking with a £3000 annual budget for 2026
I also Reverse Meal Plan on that thread and grow much of our own premium price fruit and veg, joining in on the grow your own in 2026 discussion thread
My keep within our budget diary is here3 -
That's annoying SL, but hopefully you can solve it! Is the battery still charging from the grid/discharging? That should narrow down the problem. If you're stuck, there are some helpful people on the green & ethical board who may be able to help.
I've shifted logs. What I really need to do next is unlock the workshop, get out a saw and sawhorse, and cut up the bits of scrap wood that are currently too long for the stove so they can be used up, as they take an annoying amount of space. I could also do with moving the last couple of bits of garden furniture into the shed, but think that might wait until the snow has gone.
I've also made up the bed in the front bedroom (with lots of layers, as it was cold when I was doing it!) and put a bedcover on in the hope that it will keep cats off if I leave the door open (I've closed it, but I prefer the light/airflow around the house). I've also put all the bedding and towels for the room into the CoD in there so I don't get confused (although I think there are still a couple of fitted sheets that have gone AWOL. I do need some more bedding, so have put a list together, but will wait until I've checked the back bedroom before ordering. The beds in the back bedroom are a funny size (3'6" singles) and I need to source some more fitted sheets for them. I also need more double duvet covers, and to go through my pillowcases as quite a few are badly discoloured/falling apart.3 -
You inspired me @Greenbee cutting down the too big logs was on my list too. I took the mini chainsaw to the alley to test it out and it worked. I only did a few logs as it is quite literally freezing, but I'll charge it up and do some more on a less freezing day, now I know how easy it is.
I couldn't clean the coops as the hose is frozen, but I emptied them, brushed them down, and put fresh straw in them. The rats are being particularly persistent this year. They usually show up, me and the dog annoy them, and they vacate again for a few months. Not this time. They ignore the humane traps and I'm really reluctant to use poison. They've made a home under the run and there are tunnels everywhere. I'm gonna have to add deal with rats to the list.
5 items listed on olio, 4 being collected Tuesday.
In potato news I had leftover saag aloo for lunch with a toasted pitta. I'm going to cut the pork in half because it says it feeds 9 and I'm only 1. I think I'll do a roast for tea and use up some carrots parsnips and potatoes.

Decluttered a hair mask and some chocolates, what a successful day 😁5

Went through my soup recipes book (as I took it down from the shelf to make mushroom for a visiting friend today 😊) and collated a list ones I’d like to try making for work lunches - been meaning to get to grips with this for a while and this feels like step one 😊
Also, made whole grain bread rolls from scratch - very, very messily! But I produced something edible so I count that as a win 😊❤️

Today I wore the jumper I knitted and finally finished off in Advent. It's soft and chunky with a roll neck so it's perfect for cold weather. It wouldn't pass inspection from the Knitting Bee judges but when I did a twirl for MrBC he said it looked like a "real" jumper and wondered when I had knitted it. Considering it took me many hours over several months I wouldn't trust his powers of observation very much.
i've put all the 2026 dates on our wall planner and in our diary so we have a better idea of what we are doing and when important dates are.
I took 2 returns to the Post Office and brought them home again because the PO shuts at 12 on a Saturday. Who knew it was even Saturday today anyway? Was great fun (not) slipping my way on the icy pavements in sub zero temperatures in order to not post the parcels.

Decluttered a tub of roses (binned the strawberry ones, saved the dairy milk, ate the rest), two old bottles of cooking oil (decanted one to use up, binned the other), and two old phone cables.
