Good morning,
I don't know if anyone will remember me here as I have been away for a while. I am about to get a mortgage finally and money is going to be very tight. Squeaky tight!
I am buying my sisters out of Mum's house, I lost Mum in 2024, it was a very bad time, the worst time. Aside from the grief, the money side has been difficult, I have spent many nights worried that I would lose everything. That is sort of passed now. Sort of. Working everything out has been very hard.
I started following people on social media re money management and just kept thinking..........I know this, I have done this and I used to do it better with friends, and it was much easier cos here no one knows me and social media is weird. Please tell me here hasn't become weird...........
Anyhow my basic plan is to make my wages go as far as possible. All the old frugal tips, NSDs Low spend, deals, freebies, bottom of the fridge soup, second hand everything and all the mad making money schemes. I tried a second job but it was hell.
This is with the aim of paying the mortgage and my bills which are huge!
I shall now go and see if there are any of the old posters still around........I hope everyone has won the lottery and is on a beach somewhere!

Thank you X
I have been looking at the challenges board, oh the memories. I don't use cash anymore so a lot I can't do the way I used to......back in the day!
I think I might do a payment a day? I can overpay the mortgage by 10% a year so I will PAD for that.
I would like to do the penny a day one too.
Big expenses on the horizon
1. Car MOT - Unknown amount......(Jan)
2. Dentist - 1600 (Feb)
3. Pets - always expensive.
I have a little money coming from a saving account I just have to be VERY Careful. Very careful.Nevertheless she persisted.3 -
Great to see you back, you have been missed. So sorry to hear of your mum’s passing.
while I know the temptation is to throw yourself into mortgage clearance, maybe just take on one challenge and aim for a 5% overpayment next year? Are you close to completing the very expensive dental work?Mortgage at 01.01.14 £119,481.83:eek: today £0 Emergency fund £5.5/5.5k & £200/200 cash.:jWeight 24/02/19 14st 7lb now 12st 1lb determined to stop defining myself by my mistakes. Progress not perfection.:T100%through my 1% mortgage challenge. 100% through my pb challenge. I’m not perfect but I’m good enough.1 -
Ah I remember you from years ago! I've also been AWOL and just reactivated my account! Sounds like you have a good plan and I will be following for tips if that's ok? Also wanting to pay down my mortgage and it needs focus! We've got this!1

Ah Buffy I’m so pleased you’re back! I did enquire about you and was reassured to hear that you were ok.So, very welcome back!So sorry to hear about your sad loss, but my goodness you did all that anyone possibly could for your mother.
Others on here have mentioned having the occasional paying guest, rather than a full-time lodger.Just a thought.
Very best wishes for the future - exciting!2 -
Hello Buffy, welcome back.
(I was a lurker when you were on here last time)
It is serendipity that you were enquired after by @liselle and now here you are.
Sorry to hear of your loss...
I have paying guests in the summer and it helped me out last yearIf you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them
Emergency fund 1400/1000
Buffer fund 100/100

It is weird. So much has changed but so much stays the same. I am sat here watching Bones on Disney which I would have been watching 10 years ago.
In need of Direction
I will aim for 10% as the maximum. Looking at my bills etc it is going to be tough to do but I have to have a goal!
My long term aim is to have a lodger as realistically a three bedroom house is a lot. I don't think I will enjoy having a lodger! but needs must, ideally I would like to use the other room to Air B and B but the rabbits, the endlessly expensive rabbits are moving in there over the next week (EEK) due to their age and various ailments. The house needs a lot of work. Unfortunately it will have to be done before a lodger/ paying guest as it is fine for me to manage without certain things but not them who ever they are.
My dogs wants to go out so I need to get going. I am having bubble and squeak for dinner - the last of the leftovers!
Nevertheless she persisted.2 -
Thank you for the welcome, it is LOVELY to see familiar faces! Absolutely lovely XXXXXXXXXXNevertheless she persisted.2

Welcome back
so sorry to hear of the loss of your mum , if I recall we were both caring for our parents at a similar time , I hope you are keeping as well as you can in the circumstances
When I lost my mum I also considered retaining my mums house and buying my sisters share but ultimately chose to start again , I think I was looking at it with sentimental attachment and making myself “ cash” poor asset rich with a house that required quite a lot of upgrading
im sure you will have considered all factors but in the end we sold up and I was able to buy a marginally smaller house that was move in ready and keep a good chunk of cash in the bank
I’ve never regretted it
it may eliminate the need for a lodger if consider the same , it was difficult to let go as the family home signified so much and held so many memories2
