Online parking payment not showing on credit card statement
- I received a parking charge for not paying for parking
- I was absolutely sure that I had purchased 4 hours parking using the operator's app. One part of the payment process involved my bank requiring me to confirm the payment on my banking app.
- There was indeed no record of a transaction on my credit card statement.
- I called my bank and asked them to dig deeper. They found that a transaction had in fact been made: for £0.0. It did not show on my statement because of the zero amount. However from the bank's point of view it was a successful transaction.
How could this have happened? There was no option to pay £0 on the parking operator's app.

Would have been a pre-authorisation of the card when you initially added it to the app.
Is there no receipt for the parking within the app or sent to your email?1 -
Unfortunately no receipt as the email option was switched off, and no record on the app.
I am going to appeal but am uncertain about my chances. I was convinced I had paid, there is no way I would have left the car there otherwise.
The problem is evidence I think - it would have been helpful if that £0 transaction was somehow involved in the payment, then I could perhaps point to an error in the system.0 -
Yes, but why are you appealing? There is no genuine appeals option.
Who is the parking company?Ignoring is the best option in 90%+ of cases.2 -
Yep - but that's what you do. Doesn't matter.
Ignore the £170 threatograms.Still unsure that we are right?
Just click on the words underneath the little red 'MSE link' in the small 'Parking Ticket Appeals' banner at the top of this page which leads to the MSE Guide to fight PCNs.
Same info is shown in both this forum and in that Guide, as regards the debt recovery letters being a futile stage and ignoring these demands being risk-free as long as you don't miss or ignore a Court Claim (easy to defend).
Consistent advice here is easy to find and not just from random strangers. The MSE Guide is official 'Martin Lewis backed' advice.
Worry ye not. We do this every day.
Come back if you get a court claim.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

It seems that the charge needs to be unfair.
Would you say it is unfair if I made best efforts to buy the parking (and thought I had) but for whatever reason they did not receive payment? Is that strong enough?0 -
We have seen possible use of transaction delay facility from the receiver of the payment. It seems odd that you would have input a nil amount.

Yes that's a solid defence.
Probably caused by you making payment in good faith & them not collecting it within the days after. Of course it's unfair.
On the balance of probabilities, you did NOT pay £0. If it were me, I would try to replicate this on the app (sitting at home) and have someone filming your screen on another phone, to prove that it's impossible for the driver to pay £0 when completing all steps.PRIVATE 'PCN'? Thank you, do you know why the parking company might do that? I don't know much about that facility.Snakes_Belly said:We have seen possible use of transaction delay facility from the receiver of the payment. It seems odd that you would have input a nil amount.
I definitely did not input '0', it was not an option on their app.0 -
What specific app?
The £0.00 is a request for permission to charge the card. It's not unusual.
If the app is poorly designed it will just take the £0.00 permission as the transaction. But the purpose is that you've given the company permission to charge you the correct amount. If they didn't, that's their problem.
They'll argue (wrongly) that it's your problem - "well, you should have seen it said zero" so you still didn't pay.
Luckily Group Nexus are part of the BPA so there is an appeals service that isn't quite as corrupt as the alternative trade body's. But you'll have to argue over the workings of an app.
Either way, it's not binding on you if you lose and then you'd be on the ignoring path.4
