Will the new EV per-mile tax change your purchasing plans?

I'm going to get an EV anyway
First off there is no such thing as a self charging hybrid (unless you work in marketing for the motor industry), and secondly the 3ppm is only for EVs, plug in hybrids will pay half that and you won’t pay at all for the car you currently have.dnpark38 said:I have a self charging petrol hybrid, pay tax on petrol and road tax so most annoyed to now have to pay this price per mile on top.2 -
Out of interest, what are some of the many unknowns?subjecttocontract said:I can remember talking about EVs 25 years ago and nothing much has changed. There are still far to many unknowns to give me any confidence in running one. I'm giving it a miss for the time being.
If you truly think nothing has changed with EVs in 25 years, then i think your unknowns are most likely down to lack of knowledge/understanding and/or ignorance.
I have an EV - the per mile charge wouldn't stop me getting another one - but I've kept all my cars for 8+ years so in no rush to change.
I'd not be getting a hybrid anyway, but would definitely not get one now until they clarify the 1.5 per mile charge - if it is on all miles, including those on legacy fuels, I'd feel ripped off.2 -
The hole point of the Tax is to replace fuel duty, what you plan when ICE are banned?MattMattMattUK said:An EV is still considerably cheaper to run than an ICE vehicle even with this silly idea implemented.
No significant impact on the price of EV or ICE vehicles on the second hand market.
It is still a stupid idea though, they should have increased fuel duty.1 -

ow long will it take for second hand ICE cars to disapper from the market?sheenas said:

Buy one just before the ban on sales comes into force. How long would it last?0 -
I wasn't going to get an EV anywayIt does amuse me that some of the people who are complaining the loudest about this ppm scheme and feel that others (ICE drivers) should subsidise their EV transport also tend (at least anecdotally) to be part of the same group that are complaining about their taxes going to subsidise those on benefits!

The car will probably outlast the fuel supply. Petrol and diesel sales will be in terminal decline, and filling stations will become fewer and further apart. Pump prices will rise commensurately.sheramber said:

I'm going to get an EV anyway3p on top of my 2p a mile is still over 50% less per mile than my previous HEV
Yes it will go up each year, but something has to replace the annual £25 Billion fuel duty rakes in..
Only someone living in cloud cuckoo land would think that EV's are not going to have to replace this black hole.Life in the slow lane2 -
I wasn't going to get an EV anywayThe bonus question is more interesting, I think that it will depress used EV prices even more, as demand will fall even further.Everybody hates paying tax. Actually seeing another tax spelled out and then paying it by the mile seems off-putting to me. When the tax is "hidden" like fuel duty + VAT it doesn't seem so bad.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

It's not a good look for the general populace when you're suggesting they're not bright enough to understand they're paying more tax on legacy fuels than the ppm on EVs.facade said:The bonus question is more interesting, I think that it will depress used EV prices even more, as demand will fall even further.Everybody hates paying tax. I don't think it will depress used EV prices, but that'd be great news if it does for those that buy nearly new.0 -

I've seen a lot of people buy a new car because "it's only £30 road tax". I don't have any confidence that people would look at the total cost and not just the headline 3p/mile.
Will people pay more for an ICE car with invisible tax, than an EV with an average £240 tax? Absolutely.0
