Will the new EV per-mile tax change your purchasing plans?
We've had a lot of debate about how a 3p per mile tax will be adminstered, but I'm curious as to what difference it'll make in reality.
So does this tax have any bearing on your decisions around your current or next car?
Bonus question: Does anyone think the tax will have much impact on used car priced, for either EV's or ICE?

I'm going to get an EV anywayAn EV is still considerably cheaper to run than an ICE vehicle even with this silly idea implemented.
No significant impact on the price of EV or ICE vehicles on the second hand market.
It is still a stupid idea though, they should have increased fuel duty.0 -
I was going to get an EV but won't nowThe trouble is the Gov can change any of the charges whenever they want.....increase EV road tax, increase price per mile et c . This may just be the start, it certainly isn't where it will end. I've no confidence that I'll be able to budget going forwards. I know where I am with my current diesel and petrol vehicles and I'll stay with them for the time being.0

Well if 2035 plans go ahead we are all going to get one at some point whether we like it or not. Clearly the plans have some major hole with admin, but ultimately every one should pay their fair share of tax, EVs no exception.
I don't have anyway of plugging in at home even though I have private parking. The idea that the pavements are going to be dug up so everyone can plug in is more cuckoo than than the pay per mile honesty box idea. So basically those who charge at home are not hugely affected while it's another nail in the coffin for public chargers.0 -

Surely the fairest way to tax everyone who uses the roads is to tax ICE users at the pump, and EV users by the mile.Unless you think it's all to do with emissions, in which case EVs are as harmful but simply don't blow it out an exhaust. The digging for rare earth metals, disposal of batteries and the fossil fuels used in production sort of cancel out any exhaust gases they don't produce1

The only reason you "know where you are" with ICEs is that the government has NOT increased fuel duty for years. Some contradiction?subjecttocontract said:The trouble is the Gov can change any of the charges whenever they want.....increase EV road tax, increase price per mile et c . You do know that the current 5p fuel duty cut in rates will gradually disappear from 1st September 2026 to 28 February 2027.subjecttocontract said:The trouble is the Gov can change any of the charges whenever they want.....increase EV road tax, increase price per mile et c . I was going to get an EV but won't nowI can remember talking about EVs 25 years ago and nothing much has changed. There are still far to many unknowns to give me any confidence in running one. I'm giving it a miss for the time being.0

I'm going to get an EV anywayIt will add about £300pa to my running costs so won’t change my decision to get another EV when my lease runs out on the current one.0

I have a self charging petrol hybrid, pay tax on petrol and road tax so most annoyed to now have to pay this price per mile on top.0
