  • You can use the buns receipe in the breadmaker. Either on the dough setting just to knead it for you, or experiment with the programmes till you find one that works. I tend to pause the machine if it hasn't risen enough, then set it on bake for 1 hour.
  • JUst asked a friend of ds2 who works in asda bakery, my local asda (Broadstairs) have stopped giving away yeast.
  • I work for Asda and they have a policy that if its not in stock what you want they will offer you an alternative and will quite often give you a smiley squad voucher which entitles you to it for free.. its a good customer service scheme, but seems that many do abuse it also!

I got really excited when I heard about the free yeast scenario in bakery sections of the supermarkets and I asked when I was in asda today, the baker told me that they have stopped doing it now. I even offered to buy some but he said the manager has put a blanket ban on them giving or selling it. What a shame!

  • frozen yeast works in a breadmaker with honey andsunflower oil or cooking oil
  • Delia (S) says fresh yeast can be frozen for up to 3 months though I have not tried it myself.
  • Hi,I went along to my local Asda this morning and was given some yeast with no questions asked. I'm so pleased as I'm sure fresh yeast must be better than dried, which I normally use. I currently dont have an oven so i wondered if any of you out there have any recipes for bread which can be made either in the microwave or on the hob? I usually make naan bread with the dried yeast I buy, but fancy trying something different with my free fresh yeast!Would be grateful for your suggestions (have noted the recipe for doughnuts yummy!!!)Jo
  • what quantity do i use if i am changing a recipe of dried yeast to fresh yeast?

I am looking for that answer too.

And how do you add it to a bread maker that normally asks you to put the dried yeast in first.

I am assuming proving/activate the fresh yeast before using.

I use roughly a walnut size lump [it is not too critical, but an orange size is too much]

disolve in tepid water [again not critical, but not a pint either] with a level teaspoon of sugar

Leave until it gets a "head" of foam [this will be about 15 minutes or so]

For BM that want yeast in first, ignore and add with liquid last, use tepid liquid if possible to keep yeast going

Fresh yeast is not suitable for use with timer as the yeast is live & active and will start the fermentaion / proving process at once
