Best free alternative to Word?

My year's free subscription to Office 365 is nearly expired, so I'm in need of a free alternative to Word, purely for creating letters and documents.  I've previously used LibreOffice, but are there perhaps alternatives nowadays that are worth checking out?

LibreOffice is probably still the best but there are others.... WPS Office, Google Docs and I've been recommended AbiWord, but haven't used it so might be worth a look.

We have used Google Docs at work for the last 7 years.  It has many advantages over Word in that it autosaves to the cloud and you can share/restrict as you see fit.  Even if you just use it for typing letters it's still perfectly functinoal.  Most people don't like it because some functions involve a few extra clicks to the MS version but once you're used to it i's fine

If you take a look on Groupon you can buy a Lifetime Microsoft Office 2024 licence for around £10. (I know because I did this just last week!) :D

You don't get the 1TB (or however much you get now) of OneDrive storage, but you would lose that anyway when your subscription expires. Personally, I despise OneDrive with a passion, so no loss to me! :D

Also Office 365 for the web is free. Providing you don't mind using online apps wherever you need them.

Thank you for that, which will do me nicely.  Incidentally, AFAIC Onedrive is the work of the devil and I too will have nothing to do with it!

Well, that's me sorted again thanks to MSE  :D

Quite correct, however I think that our comments more refer to the individual development teams that created each product rather than the overall parent company (which appears perfectly capable of creating some products that are quite good, and others that absolutely suck!) 😂
