What are the "specific rules" you mention?

For a hospital appointment.. If you want to attend it helps. In fact you should not need to book a holiday for a hospital appointment.

yes but my job is HGV driver it’s not an office based job where you can just nip out.

most office jobs don't allow you to "nip out" either even when it's a hospital appointment. Any role I've had you had to agree the absence in advance - unless you were so far gone that you couldn't speak or similar. And even then courtesy and business "rules" (what used to be a staff handbook) would say that you needed to inform your manager.

which is what i have done booking the day off 15 days in advance. Unfortunately hospital appointments aren’t always 6 months in advance i got the appointment Thursday and booked the day off Thursday.

But did you tell them it was for a hospital appt as my company has different policies for annual leave/hospital appts.

That is not automatic. In may be common practice and / or company policy for many employers but there is no specific legal right to time off for routine medical appointments.

So, there are no "specific rules".

Yes, but had it been mentioned. The reply may not have been a outright no. More of a how long do you need to cover the appointment. 🤷♀️
