Getting paid less than others.

So i started a new job in January hgv driving for a small company with 3 drivers in total including myself the job is salaried and paid a set amount of hours per week we all do exactly the same work per day it’s job and knock so get your jobs done and off you go home. After comparing wages with the other 2 drivers i found out they get paid 3 hours more than me per week this accounts to over £2000 per year i am a single man with bills to pay would you question this or let it go? It really bothers me tbh because we all do the exact same jobs. Just wondering what others would do in this situation. Thanks

It may have been negotiated or it may be based on other factors like experience or even how much the boss likes them.  Yes, question it and if they say no, ask why.  And ask what you can do to get a raise.

So you are on a 35 hour contract and they are on 38 hours?

So as well as being paid more they are working more hours too?

The only regulations on salary are that 1) you are paid at least NMW if you divide the pay given by the number of hours worked 2) Difference in pay isnt due to protected characteristics (sexual orientation, religion, race etc)

So nothing wrong with them paying the others a higher salary and/or giving them more hours as long as you are paid NMW and it's not because you're a woman and they are blokes or whatever.

I had a direct report come to complain to me that his salary was too low once, was very tempted to tell him he was earning £5k/year more than me

But you can do it in 44 hours and it takes them 47 hours, so they get paid more for being less efficient.
Unfair, you'd be right to query it.

Pay doesn’t have to be fair to be lawful,
You can absolutely query it and ask if there’s any way you could be paid more, whilst putting up a good case to show why they should pay you the extra three hours. They are under no obligation to do so.
And your marital status is completely irrelevant to the discussion, so if you are requesting more money, you need a much better reason than that.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

do you regularly do more than 44 hours per week? how often do you do 47 hours?
It may be that previously all drivers got paid 47 hours but they realised that was not required so future recruits will be paid 44 hours but they have decided not to change the existing drivers contracts.
It would be easier to 'argue' that you are working hours that you are not being paid for rather than your colleagues being paid for hours they are not working

So if it’s “job and knock” - how often do you actually work for the full 44 hrs you are getting paid for ?!

Sometimes you may get more than you bargain for by bringing attention to hours, pay etc etc

Why do you think they are being more inefficient rather than simply doing another 3 hours over and above what the OP does? Eg they have a longer route each day that takes longer
