I've had a couple of ex-rental vehicles, both fine. The last one I kept for 17 years.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

If it's 2 years old then it's more likely to have been a long term rental, and given it's now worth £35k it's probably quite a premium car.

So it'll have been looked after a lot better than the economy model on a daily rental.
  • I'd have no problem buying an ex-rental car; they are likely to have been serviced properly and on time. My son had an ex rental Hyundai for years with no issues.

I did omit the fact I actually found enterprise rent a car paperwork in the glove box with the car’s registration on it.
But you didn't find that in the glovebox BEFORE agreeing to buy?

I'm pretty sure this is the same as car's that have been written off.

While private sellers must not lie, they don't have to declare if a vehicle has been written off, or an ex hire car.

But, a dealer must mention it in the advert.

I don't think they can plead ignorance either, I don't believe any dealer has a car they haven't HPId, so they would know.

HPI claim to report on the "Number of Previous Owners"*, not on their identity. So how would that help?

AFAIK they have no way of knowing how a vehicle has been used, and don't claim to.

    * = they clearly mean keepers.

If it's a hire or lease car it will have almost certainly been registered to a finance or lease company and not someone like Enterprise or Hertz.
Just maybe, it might have been registered to a parent/holding company but they are generally leased and returned within a certain time/mileage to maximise values.

I all my years I have never seen a rental company name on a logbook and I did used to buy at auctions a fair bit in the past.
I have bought what I already knew was an ex rental and it was actually registered to a bank.

I've also bought a few dealer registered cars in the past and noticed even those never had the dealer name on them. They had all been registered to some parent/holding company.
Chances are if you buy a car registered by Vertu, it's keeper will be something like Hughes Group.

The dealer might have an inkling it's been on a hire fleet, but won't know for sure. At best they might have the V5C with a lease, finance or holding company name and address on and that might be a familiar name but that lease/finance companies will deal with all sorts of lease and fleet markets, not just hire fleets.

The main complaint of the OP is that they now "know" it's a ex rental.
There is nothing about if the car has any defects or problems and I presume they were quite happy with the car until they found a piece of paper with a name on it.
Only they will ever know that particular car's previous owner as previous owners are no longer named on the V5C.

They obviously wasn't bothered about who owned it before they bought it, otherwise they would have at least tried to ask and just going off a simple search of fleets sales as a percentage, it's highly likely any dealers forecourt is crammed with ex fleet cars.

To be surprised it's come from some fleet is stretching it, finding it was privately owned would be more of a surprise.
