It's not very helpful if they don't explain the reasons in their opening post, I'm not going to go and read every post thst someone has ever made. It seems rather pointless trying to avoid banks only to immediately want to find a way to transfer money to banks.
But the banks will steal you money next. in fact HMCR are doing it now, steeling money from peoples bank accounts
I'm surprised you haven't gone 100% "cash only" and keep your savings under the mattress.
I dont save money; its a mugs game!

Sadly I dont live in Cumberland any more. Nationwide, i did not like the 1 hour quew in there so I left and did not bother to open an account
I have a bank account with Co-op. I dont like them one bit! I dont like Richard Branson one bit either! and now you complete the circut by naming them as Nationwide

Well if you don't like your Co-op account, don't like any of the other Building Societies and object to paying Credit Union fees, you're pretty much out of options. Good luck.

If the bank has FSCS protection, like most do, then your money is protected if anything happens to the bank. Building societies being owned by members doesn't make much difference in reality, Nationwide were appalling when I made an irresponsible lending complaint.

If yoy value small businesses and being served by a person then a local building society would meet ypur needs for now, but eventually branches won't exist anywhere.

Manchester BS isn't even a, "local building society" in the true sense: it'a simply a trading name of Newcastle BS and no longer exists as a separate entity.

Then are there any separate enterties that operate as BSs?

There are lots of small building societies up and down the country for example Newbury building society which has 10 branches in the south east

What are you trying to achieve here? Why do you want a savings account with somewhere that makes it so difficult to access your money and then want a debit card to make it easier to spend it. What's the problem with opening a savings account with one of the online providers and then just linking thst to your current account that has a debit card?
Read his post history, it's about trying to avoid banks, tracking etc hence the comments about tattoos, not worth going down the rabbit hole of "reasoning"

I get that but these posts go on for yonks every time he posts as he's always trying to avoid banks and such, just explaining so people can stop engaging and wasting their time trying to understand what he's trying to achieve or why. I'm sure there are more suitable forums for trying to avoid being part of the "system"

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
