Windows 11 for an ignoramus.

It is a desktop - an all in 1 desktop if that makes a difference?0

Before you start spending any money, try the instructions in this video: New Method For Windows 11 Unsupported PCs (Easiest Yet)0

OK, it might not be possible (im assuming when you say all-in-one you have everything built into the monitor and no oblong tower and monitor)
I think you would have to check if your current CPU is socketed or soldered (if soldered you can't)
Also the new CPU would have to be compatible with the existing motherboard and BIOS.
I'm guessing you think like me -----> if i can get the old machine to work somehow then great, if not i'm going to be committed to spending money on a new computer, then more on getting all the files transferred, then i need to get used to the new computer, then i need to type all my login details on all my sites again as the new computer is not recognised, and then i'm potentially throwing the old computer to landfill ------> what a faff.... what a cost.... what a waste!
You might be best to speak to a local computer shop and see if
A) it is just the CPU that needs changing and nothing else
B.) There is a new CPU available which will be compatible with your existing computer + Windows11 will work
C) what's this all going to cost versus a newer replacement computer
You could try Curry's again but in sceptical how knowledgeable their staff are compared to an independent shop.
Perhaps others could suggest any other alternativesI have a tendency to mute most posts so if your expecting me to respond you might be waiting along time!2 -
I think we should take the OP at his word "I know absolutely nothing about tech stuff" before suggesting CPU upgrades, flashing the BIOS, installing Windows 11 from an ISO using Rufus or installing Linux Parsley.9

After spending half the day looking at pages on my desktop that I didn't know existed, it appears to be the CPU that is not supported for windows 11 on my PC.
Microsoft tell me that this "is not considered an upgradable component".
Presumably, this does mean I need a new/second hand PC?
@GDB2222, when I got my current computer from Curry's, I took in the old one and they transferred everything across for me, for a fee.
I think you should avoid buying all in one computers. They look neat, but they are hard to upgrade.Your solution for the time being is to extend Windows 10 support until October 2026. It makes your present PC safe until then. This is an option in Settings. Do you need a hand to do this?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2 -
MS are charging $61 per year for extended W10 support. You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Isn't $61 the price for support for a business computer. My Win10 laptop is registered for free but even if I had paid it would have been £30 for the year to Oct 2026.2

@Vitor - You are not wrong! You have understood my situation exactly - other than I'm a "she" not a "he", nevertheless, I am grateful for folk taking the time to reply and I now know slightly more today than I did when I posted.4 -
Apologies for misgendering the OP.3
