An app to track your hours worked (clock in & clock out times)?

Let's get it out of the way - "just write it down on paper & work it out".
No.

Right, now that one's dealt with...

I'm looking to see if anyone knows of an app where you can input your clock in & clock out times.

*** An app that is free!! ***

I've done a bit of searching but not really found anything that ticks the box. Some overcomplicate things, others are clearly paid-for. I tried one I thought would be ok but turned out that it was another pay-for app.

All I want is an app where I can clock on at work, clock off & then track this. At the end of the week it tells me the hours I worked total & from that I can figure out if they're paying me correctly.

Now whether that's hitting a button in the app as I clock on & then off or whether that's manually entering it in an app or whatever, just something to track.

So if I clock on at 8:57 and clock off at 5:06 then we will get paid from 9:00 - 5:00 with 30mins deducted for dinner so that's 8 hours at work but 7.5 hours pay.

I say this because even better if the app can be configured in a way to tell me 8:57 - 5:06 gets me 7.5 hours pay but I don't really know what's doable at the moment.

I'm hoping at least one of you uses an app like this & can suggest something.

That isn't bits of paper everywhere.

Have you looked at HoursTracker? It’s free and I use it for my hourly-paid freelancing work- it’s been a game changer. Don’t think it can calculate your lunch break though, but you could enter it as a break.

You’re going to hate me for saying this  but a mini diary avoids having scraps of paper everywhere. 🤣

I use Libre Office calc (free version of excel) to track and record my working periods. You can add as much detail as you think necessary. Also available on your mobile phone.

Google Sheets would be another "free" option.  Apps for phones, and web for everywhere else.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the app suggestions.

Regards Excel - I actually currently use this although are system at work is changing where it could be better for me to have an app.

Currently I photo my card at the end of the working week & input all time stamps in to Excel. I then have to manually calculate how many hours pay I should get each day & then total it for the week (hours worked can vary, it's not a set 9-5 for example). 99% of the time I don't make a mistake but anything that's manual has the chance of it & I've made them in the past and looked stupid when I've challenged my 'low pay'. Thankfully the amount of times I've been wrong over the years can be counted on 1 hand. If only my employer could say the same.

We're going to be switching to a new system whereby there will be no visible time stamp on a card. So there will be no looking back at the end of the week to see what I clocked in/out on each day.

I also don't want to clock on & then have to fire up excel, scroll down to todays cell (because it always opens at the top of the sheet, never to the bottom), input the time - it's faffy and if the manager/boss has their head on them that day then it's just aggro I could do without.

Equally I don't want to then have to get my paper, my notepad, my diary, mini diary or whatever other pen & paper setup & start writing things down, getting it back in my pocket/bag while I'm carrying all my gear in (I carry quite a bit of stuff in with me daily but yes I could just quickly press a button).

I was thinking something like have the app open, clock on, press a button on the app which will 'stamp' me at that given time & record it as 'IN', do the same later that day for OUT.

If it doesn't knock off 30mins for dinner then that's no big deal I can do that.

If you are willing to invest a little time in Google Sheets you can make exactly what you need.
    • Google Sheets app (Android) remembers the sheet location when you open up - no need to scroll.
    • If you format cells as "time", when you edit to enter data there is a floating clock icon.  If you click this it loads the current time into that cell.
    • If you have one column for Start (A10 say), another for finish (B10 say), you can have a third (probably C10) which calculates the duration (B10-A10) - also formatted as time.
    • You can even deduct your dinner - (B10-A10)-"0:30:00" will do that.

The part of the app that does the time calculation would need to include the rounding up (at start of day) to the next 15-minute (or whatever) increment and the rounding down (at end of day) to the end of the previous 15-minute increment.  Only then can the hours worked be calculated.
