In terms of speed limits and enforcement - I think it is happening the wrong way around.  By now they should have developed some sort of smart device fitted to all new cars, that receives a signal and activates the cars speed limiter.  You could then use the current infrastructure (lamp posts, average speed cameras etc) to transmit this signal from anywhere via blutooth or whatever.  In essence, they make the laws so they should be forcing cars to drive at a legal speed if the technology exists.  Rather than relying on manufacturers to try and do a workaround.  It is far better to physically prevent a car from speeding than it is to simply fine the driver after the event
    Mmm.
We all know how well Gov IT systems go. We do not even have a single system (it's 3) for updating speed limits etc to the navigation companies who supply car manufactures.

Lose of money V Spending millions, maybe more on a system That is fraught with danger. Drivers will turn off knowing car is at limit. Yet if in a line of traffic, going from 60 to 30. 1st car goes through slows down fast... You can guess what will happen down the line.

Might as well go straight to self driving cars.😶‍🌫️

I've driven my car myself for around 30 years. I don't need any babysitting and turn off whatever "aids" I can. I don't feel they make me safer, just add annoying noises that distract me.
I've had a used car with a few "aids" - the speed limiter remains unactivated, but "lane assist" is a pain as it seems to try to drag the steering. Given that I live in a rural area this was a little alarming at first; however, at the start of each journey I turn this "aid" off. It is a distraction, and after over 40 years of never being involved in any collision and only two speeding tickets, I too prefer not to be babysat.

If I get to a point when I'm unaware of what's around me, I should stop driving.
How would you be aware that you are unaware?

Maybe you should stop now when you are aware you will eventually be unaware, that might be safer as being unaware that you will be unaware at some point in the future would obviously be dangerous.

Or maybe we should all stop now as I am certain every driver has at times been unaware of a hazard or speed limit or no right turn etc.
You have provided some evidence of that with your two speeding tickets or were you aware of the speed limit but just couldn't care.

I've never had a speeding ticket. Maybe you confused me with another poster......

I have been coaching my offspring to take my car away from me if I ever get to the satge where I lack vision/ responses to drive as no doubt I will be like the others who persist in driving erratically and dangerously when they should be in the passenger seat!

As others have said, the limiter, the 'intelligent' type, can mis-read mph signs just like my cruise control does when set at 20mph

Years ago, we had 20mph on most major roads where we live, and the 20mph is enforced, so I use the cruise control set at 20mph.  I've only tested the speed limiter, but it's not for me.

It would be a trivial add-on to the road pricing that is coming.
It only needs a database of speed limit geolocations, that could be updated every time the car sends its journey logs to HMRC.

(We will just ignore the fact that my 2022 in built Satnav completely fails to see any satellites whenever the weather gets too "weathery"- and this is pretty common from owner feedback)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
