Speed limiters on cars

Speed limiter on cars is it a good thing?

I've just bought a new car, a Honda Jazz hybrid, and of course I am trying out all the gadgets and driving aids.

One of those is an intelligent speed limiter as the town I live in has a 20 mph limit.

So I've been using the intelligent speed limit function where it reads the speed limit signs and prevents you speeding.

It feels very strange, especially when it slows you down from 30 mph to 20 mph 100 yards before the actual speed limit sign on one particular road.

Do others use the speed limiter in town or do they think it is too controlling like I do?

At least it stops me exceeding the speed limit and the annoying beeping that happens when I do 21 mph.

It doesn't really bother me as I am partially deaf but it annoys my wife.

Any ideas to turn the beeping off permanently?

Just be careful, there can read the wrong limit. We have a lot where it picks up 20 side road limit.

I'm not sure whether any other cars have more intelligent systems, but my bugbear (with a Golf) is that the camera doesn't read the context of the speed limits e.g. if it's "20 but only when the lights are flashing" or "40 if you're an HGV" or the first countdown marker to a 30 is taken as being where the limit commences.

Also occasionally "reading" limits on slip roads or which otherwise don't apply to the direction you're headed.

I prefer what my Mercedes had which read the signs and displayed it on the dash but didnt adjust the speed for you.

How does it deal with an urban environment where the speed limit is 20 on the road where you currently are but if you turn off it there may not be more signs as it defaults back to 30.

what if there's something happening that means you have to accelerate suddenly?  Does it stop you doing that?

OH's volvo has all sorts of fancy safety features and they drive me batty.  I much prefer my basic VW which is about as smart as a rotary phone.

I think any touching of the pedals override the limiter. (Or at least it does on mine).
  • I beleive the setting you are looking for to stop the beeping is the speed alarm.
You should be able to access this in the paddles in the bottom right of steering wheel. Mine is in the dash screens, sometimes you have to go into the settings to access it. See this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7O9TCYZOF0
  • I've driven my car myself for around 30 years. I don't need any babysitting and turn off whatever "aids" I can. I don't feel they make me safer, just add annoying noises that distract me.

It's vanishingly rare that that's more appropriate than braking...

...but if it is, then mashing the throttle overrides.

By all means inform of the limit, but any system which automatically sets vehicle speed based on info the vehicle is collecting needs turning off.

In the last few weeks I've had a limit of 135mph showing on the dash display and last night I left a 50 onto a 30, yet the dash showed a NSL symbol.  I had been on no NSL limit roads on my journey.
