Dell laptop 7537EE6/Inspiron 5593 power adaptor/battery

My laptop (model as in the heading) is displaying a message saying 'the power adaptor is not recognised'. It also previously displayed something like 'your battery is not supported', although it does that less frequently now.

It is still working OK, except for the battery lasts a nano second if not plugged in.

Anyone have any ideas if I have to

1...change the power adaptor (for what?) or
2... change the battery ?

I am completely useless, so not sure if I can change the battery myself (if needed)

Can anyone advise please ? thank you

Check the power adaptor is pushed tight together, I've had that message when the 3 pin kettle lead bit was not pushed fully into the in cable transformer block, push tight and it went away.

Dell power adapters have logic built into them that lets them communicate with your laptop and tell it how much power they can supply.
If your plug or cable are damaged, this communication can break down. Is there any sign of damage or deformation with your charger cable or plug?

The laptop is from 2019/2020 so is a bit beyond the point a new battery was needed.

Sorry I don't understand - are you saying I need a new battery?

It's very likely you do. It's impossible to be accurate without knowing how the laptop was used. But five years is about the absolute maximum for a lithium based battery. And one sign of a battery that's failed is not holding its charge so that you need to keep it plugged in.

It's more that most people wear them out within five year. Mine's twelve year old and is still fine on the rare occasion I unplug it.

If I was you I'd get a new battery from Amazon. Youtube can tell you how to change it. If it's still the same it's probably the adapter.
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

I was sure it was my Dell battery (I had a seperate power supply I could try).  After seeing some of the reviews of 3rd party batteries (capacity and safety are a recurring theme!) I decided to source from Dell.
