In my town the rules at roundabouts appear to be:
    1. If turning left, don't indicate.
    2. If going straight on, indicate right to show you're not turning left (and let the indicators cancel themselves once you've exited).
    3. If turning right, don't indicate (because you've run out of options).
Occasionally you get people who indicate correctly:
    1. When taking the next exit, indicate left.
    2. If going straight on, don't indicate (until #1).
    3. If going right, indicate right (until #1).
    And then there are:
    1. The ones who just don't indicate at all (why should they care about anybody else?)
The problem is that you don't know which category any given driver belongs to, so it's all down to guesswork.
I'm convinced it must be driving instructors who are teaching it wrong, because the incorrect way is just too prevalent.
No indication, then you do not move till you know where they are going. 👍

    Thanks for the advice there!
However, the general gist is that you can't tell where people are going even when they do indicate.

As Bigphil my driving instructor said 'its not about how well you drive, it's about the silly begger coming towards you '
Surprisingly that stayed with me and was good advice.

I am not sure the standard of driving has fallen over the years, just that there are a lot more drivers so a lot more bad ones. The driving test seems to be quite difficult these days which should improve matters. When I took mine in 1963 it was an absolute joke; barely 15 minutes long, no written test, and I think I only passed because the part-time examiner needed a lift to the library.

    <snip>

Speakers - Play awful music so loud it can vibrate windows fifty meters away

    <snip>
I want a dual sound system on my next car.
On the outside- 50,000 watts of bangin' toons and bass.
On the fully sound insulated inside- Vivadi at a pleasantly low volume.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • I shouldn't say this but there seems to be a certain make of car that attracts drivers that love to tailgate and are generally quite aggressive.
I won't name the make but I think we all know what it is.

    Skoda?
(Oh no - they're the passive-aggressive ones who drive at erratic speeds so you can't help but catch up to them...)

Not quite, These people wouldn’t be seen in a Skoda! However some would say that it is a Skoda tarted up…

You can criticise/report other people’s driving habits and even submit Dash-Cam footage but you must remember that when they go through the footage they will also be observing your own personal Good/Bad/Indifferent driving habits at the same time. Any found may well result in you personally being prosecuted.

I can and often do criticise other people's driving habits and rightly so, I also know any footage I submit will be looked at from my side as well, I have no problem with my driving being scrutinised.

I would say that is a pretty big leap. I do not speed (my car would whinge at me if I did, as all modern cars do), I do not run red lights, I give cyclists a safe distance when overtaking, I stop for pedestrian crossings, I do not tailgate, I follow the principle of Mirrors>Signal>Maneuverer, rather thank LookAtPhone>Maneuverer>GestureAgressively. I have read the Highway Code, I can also read which would seem to put me ahead of many people. Now I may make an occasional error, potentially a lane error when driving somewhere new with poor signage, but I never drive at 60mph in a 30, I never drive at 95mph on motorway, I do not tailgate, I understand red lights and box junctions because I am not mentally impaired. I and many others might make the occasional genuine error, but most of the things people complain about are very obliviously not genuine errors but deliberate acts which both break laws and endanger other road users.

I always found it amusing when I operated a vehicle hire business the answer to the question when doing the documentation.

    Have you had any accidents?

    No

How long will you need the car for?

Depends on how long the car is in the bodyshop

So you have had an accident?

No it was not me it was that idiot who pulled out in front/stopped suddenly etc.

I have never caused an accident, I have been in two. Rear ended waiting at a red light and driven into whilst parked, both instances by people who were using their phones whilst driving, the former was speeding and the latter was driving on the wrong side of the road, they were both idiots, there was two sets of dashcam footage of both of them (mine and another driver's) they should both never drive again, neither were even prosecuted, let alone banned.

The bible says a lot of things, did you know that The Faraway Tree also tells people to be nice to their friends?

Can you truthfully say that you have never been guilty of similar?
Of most of the things yes. Have I ever sped, yes, have I ever exceeded the speed limit by 10mph, let alone 30mph or 50mph, absolutely not. Have I ever gone through a traffic light on amber? Of course, that is perfectly legal and acceptable. Have I ever driven through a red light? Twice, once to let a police car through who kept his sirens on, which means get out of the way (they will turn sirens off and keep lights on if they want you to wait until the light turns green) and once because I misjudged a junction, the light was probably red by a second. Do I do it five or ten seconds after going red, do I just ignore red lights or do I do it habitually? No, of course not, because I am a fully functional human. Do I use my phone whilst driving? No, never.

The complaints are not because of occasional minor infractions, they are a pattern of either total incompetence or a deliberate pattern of behaviour taken because those doing so are not decent people.

    1. Crossing the stop light on amber is not "perfectly legal and acceptable". It is perfectly illegal, with one specific exception.

    2. "
sirens on, which means get out of the way" - Can you cite an authority for that?

The official position is "Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic signs."

In particular "Do NOT break the law. by moving past the light ... leave the emergency  vehicle to find its way around you." See https://www.dwfire.org.uk/education/road-safety/blue-light-aware/

My father never even took a test!  He always thought he was a great driver, but had lots of bad habits - in fact I used to criticise his driving almost as much as my kids criticise mine!  :D
