One thing to think about is potentially the Amazon Fire Tablets offer great value for money, it is a fork of Android, but the UI is very similar, however it is not quite the same, so subjective.
Yeah the Amazon Fire tablets are good but the fact that you can't use the Google Play Store is a deal breaker.  I know there's a workaround but my dad isn't going to want the faff of doing that.

Hi, I'm looking for a budget android tablet for my dad.  His budget is up to £150 and he wants one with about an 8 inch screen.  He only does basic browsing and watching the odd youtube video.

I'm thinking about either the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 or one of the Lenovo tablets in Argos - either the M8 or M9.  Just wondered if anyone can give me advice about which one to go for?  Or any other suggestions.  Thanks alot

I would consider spending the £10 extra on the LTE version of whichever you choose.

Samsung A9 LTE 64GB goes for around £90 on Amazon or eBay  https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CP18H82R/
    Redmi SE 8.7 LTE 64GB £79.99 128GB £89.99  https://www.mi.com/uk/product/redmi-pad-se-8-7-inch-4g/

There are so many different versions  of the Samsung Galaxy tab A9 on Amazon that I find it quite confusing.  There LTE Versions, EU Version, Non-UK Version, EU Version.

The UK version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 is on Amazon for £139 which is £10 cheaper than Currys and Argos.

But I don't get why some of the A9+ versions (which has an 11" screen) or LTE versions are actually cheaper than this.  I'm guessing it's because they're non-UK .

Put it this way...it's low spec tablet with a low resolution TFT screen and released eighteen months ago.
The problem with the non-UK models is the warranty. You need to make sure that it is valid in the U.K.
Currys is selling exactly the same part number: https://business.currys.co.uk/catalogue/computing/tablets/tablet/samsung-galaxy-tab-a9-tablet-android-64-gb-8-7-3g-4g/P303874P

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SM-X110NZAAEUB-tablette-Mediatek-802-11ac/dp/B0CN5LBKLL States 3 Year warranty, but confirm before purchase.

If you pay £139 for a WiFi only model, I may ask Admin to delete your account, as you'd have no business being on a money saving website. :)
LTE best as you have the back up of SIM card use and GPS, so can also be used for navigation independently.

Doesn't seem right that you have to pay more in the U.K. for much the same thing.

    Redmi's LTE offer has a 2 Year Warranty @ £89.99: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xiaomi-Graphite-Processor-expandable-display,90Hz/dp/B0DB2G1WGR
They offer a 10% discount for buying direct @ https://www.mi.com/uk/product/redmi-pad-se-8-7-inch-4g/, but no mention of the 2 Year warranty there, so best to check beforehand. £81 for budget tablet with LTE. You can give it a test run and if no good, return it and grab the Samsung. Which is up to £60 more, just for the WiFi version.

I eventually got an Honor ?x8? I think. On offer from Argos for about £100.
It's a 10/11 inch but they probably have smaller. But reading and browsing the net is easy at this size and the keyboard letters are clear, large and easy.

I was clueless at first but someone set the initial settings and it didn't take long to learn what I needed.

He might also appreciate if you use Duck duck as the default browser because you don't get advertising on the videos.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

It's not 'on offer from Argos', that's just the current price.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/HONOR-11-Inch-Storage-8300mAh-Quad-speaker/dp/B0DBR92VHD/ £99.99

Which makes the £139.99 for a smaller and lower resolution screen seem unreasonable.

It confuses me too, I am looking for something for my partner, he has a samsung phone, so I think he’d get on best with a similar tablet

Simply put, U.K. version for full warranty. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CMD7JPJN Only worth it if you already have Amazon Prime or a free trial.
Question...if he already has a full featured Smartphone, why does he need a tablet that has a poorer screen and lesser function?
I have an iPad that I don't use at all. :)
If I was in the market for such a thing, it would be for the 8GB RAM 128 GD storage version with LTE capability. The Amazon link above has a WiFi only 128GB storage version but is deliberately vague and misleading with regard to the RAM capacity. I suspect it's only 4GB.
