If I change broadband supplier will they cancel my virgin media contract for me

Options
I have been with Virgin Media for 10 years plus mainly because it was so difficult to cancel them. But I have finally decided its time to break free from these crooks. I think my contract ends on 8/08/2025 but it says the direct debit will nearly double on the 10/08/2025. So either one of these is my contract end date. I am getting charged for a phone landline that has never been used ever and a TV package that has not been watched in over 2 years. I don't even have the TV box plugged in. Why does this company insist on forcing these obsolete services onto you? All i need is a good fast and reliable internet connection.

Anyway I have been dreading making the call to attempt to cancel, I tried once 5 years ago and they just wouldn't let me cancel no matter what i did so I gave up and accepted a deal. However, I have seen several posts saying that you can now just sign up for a different broadband company and they will handle the cancelation for you, is this correct? If so it will be a god send!

If this is not the case what is the most efficient way to cancel? I have heard they have even stopped accepting written letters and closed their PO Box to prevent people cancelling this way?

Either way I dont want it to continue beyond contract end date and will be cancelling that DD before the
10/08/2025.

If you use the switching service it should cancel the VM broadband and phone (if you choose to move that too).

It WILL NOT cancel the VM TV service so a switch may fail or be partly complete, be warned.

DO NOT cancel your DD until you receive a final bill from VM.

You may have to accept having some overlap in services.

You've heard incorrectly and it is so simple to find this

OTS , One Touch Switching should serve notice to Virgin on your behalf if you sign up with a different provider , however , your TV package with Virgin may not be linked to your other services (broadband and phone  ) so may continue after the migration is completed , plus anecdotally it seems OTS is pretty poor and you may still need to cancel Virgin yourself , especially if you don’t want telephony from the new provider so don’t ‘tick’ the ‘do you want to keep  your telephone number’ box on the new provider’s signup page …if you don’t get a ‘sorry you are leaving’ letter or email from Virgin soon after signing up , I’d be chasing it with Virgin , there are  plenty of complaints about people thinking OTS has notified the old provider and the old provider doesn’t cease service saying they were never notified you then end up paying for two services etc , especially if the new provider and old provider use different underlying networks, obviously moving away from Virgin must mean a different network, but some will move Openreach ISP to another Openreach ISP , where on the old service has to stop for the new service to start

So what should I do? Do I go through the One touch system and sign up for a new provider and also send a letter informing them of my cancellation of all services including the TV package?  I want to avoid talking to them on the phone if at all possible? I only want an internet connection with the new provider, so I want everything else cancelled.

How would I word this letter?

Does the money saving expert broadband switcher use the One touch system

But that does not mean they will actually accept the letter or acknowledge it.

@recci you've got the information from myself and @iniltous so take it from there.

If you are so sceptical about the post use online chat and keep a record and ensure they confirm by email.

As for comparison sites, uswitch does use the OTS, but whether it or others work if you have VM TV services, who knows?

As stated , if your TV is separate ( people can have Virgin for TV as a standalone service) so you may need to check that it’s going to be removed if you are successful in moving your broadband supply , the key is the sorry you have chosen to leave letter or email , if you don’t get one you should be sceptical that OTS has been successful, if you do get a communication from VM saying sorry you are going , if it says nothing more , so doesn’t say your broadband, telephone and tv will stop on **/**/** , I would be calling to VM to check….FWIW , although they don’t make it easy , they obviously stop you leaving , but you may have to say ‘ No I don’t want any service from you’ a few times to the retention staff , they do make efforts to get you to stay ,you just need to stick to your guns and say even if it were free I’d still leave , that usually gets the job done

As far as I was aware the TV, broadband and phone was all one package. Really what I was getting at is if I use OTS and also send a letter to cancel would this confuse things.

I recently switched from VM to Sky using the switching service. I rquested the switch in January, it was completed in May. Most of the wait was for Openreach to bring FFTP.
However, the Sky TV service was started in January, so I was billed for both Sky(only for TV) and VM until May.
On the upside I was not contacted by VM except them sending a box and label for the return of their equipment.
I later recieved £130 credit from Sky due to the delay, and then to my surprise a refund cheque from VM another £170. Done through Topcashback another £102.
The Sky service is £22 for BB and £22 for TV and landline, including Netflix and Discovery+.
For info. VM subsciption was £70 per month.

    Would this letter work:

    Cancellations

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Re: Notice of cancellation of services — Account number [XXXXXXXXX]

I am writing to give formal notice that I wish to cancel my Virgin Media services at the end of my current contract.

I believe my minimum contract term ends on 8 August 2025, and I understand that my direct debit is due to increase on 10 August 2025. To avoid this price increase, I would like my services to end at the conclusion of my minimum term.

As per your terms and conditions, I am providing at least 30 days' notice of cancellation. Please confirm the exact end date of my contract and confirm the date on which my services will be disconnected.

Please also confirm that no early termination fees will apply and that my final bill will reflect only the charges up to my contract end date.

If you require any further information, please let me know.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to receiving written confirmation of my cancellation.

    Yours faithfully,
