So essence of the story is I made the error of not going to the vets much sooner and scuppered any chance of getting reimbursed for the treatment.

Beware of taking legal advice from random people on the internet.
I have noticed that some people on these forums like to pounce on people and tell them why they are in the wrong.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

No, you could deduct the extra charge for emergency care and ask for the rest.

If you went to the likes of Vets Now , which provide out of hours cover  for several vet surgeries, they are very expensive as they pay staff extra for working unsociable  hours.
You pay  just to walk in the door.

You could ask around the area to see if anyone else knows who they are and where they live.
I managed to find out the details of someone whose dog attacked mine via my window cleaner.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I wouldn't put it as strongly as that but it may well not have helped I'm afraid.
