Cold you not have made an appointment with your normal vet?

Why did you go to the emergency vet if he was limoing but not showing signs if being ill.
So a limping dog doesn’t merit immediate treatment I am sure if you started limping which usually means pain you would attend A&E and not wait to see your local GP
Of course getting a appointment to see a GP is near impossible

Probably neither - I'd not seek medical attention just because my leg or foot started hurting. Certainly not emergency medical attention.

But humans vs animals aren't really a good comparison, as animals can't tell us what the problem is.

I took would be querying an emergency vets bill. You could have got a vets appt in working hours on the Monday at normal cost or on the Tuesday.

You say after s few days he was still limping implying no change and therefore it was in fact limping during working hours.

Those who say wouldn't it deserve immediate treatment and talking about A&E.

Well yes if needed but OP chose not to get immediate treatment opting to wait a few days.

I agree with this. Also, if my dog had been attacked, I'd be booking in at the (non-emergency) vet straight away.

I would also query the emergency vet's bill.

I took my small dog to the vet last week because he had an infection, like your dog. I phoned the practice on Monday morning and they saw us later the same day. We were given a course of antibiotics, total cost £95.

I associate emergency veterinary treatment with calling the vet out of hours for urgent, immediate treatment.

PS - whether the other dog's owner is a business or not, it's nothing to do with consumer rights!
    Perphaps it was a Sunday
If it was a Sunday would wait to the Monday given its best to treat infections as early as possible?

Dogs should be under control, I can't see a court is going to quibble over a £400 vet bill, it's hardly much these days, if OP was claiming thousands for "emergency" treatment then perhaps there would be more scrutiny, either way OP will need the dog owners name to chase this.

OP have you reported the matter to your local council? They should have a dog warden who would deal with dogs being out of control (assuming this was a public place).

I also agree I don’t think the emergency vet was justified. Your dog wasn’t in immediate danger. I don’t think a judge would agree either.
If it was me I would ask for the normal vet fee to be paid and maybe go halves on the emergency vet bill?

But the OP didn’t get immediate attention.

He has already waited days so why not go the the vet in normal surgery hours?

My vet has an extra consultation charge for  an emergency consultation OOH but the medical / treatment charges are the same.

If OP’s vet operates the same way then deduct the OOH charge from the bill.

He should have reported the dog to the local dog warden, who could obtain the owner!s details.

The OP could do that now.

He could also ask neighbours what  the man’s name is.

I certainly wouldn't go to A&E in those circumstances.  Unless you've been in some sort of accident neither limping nor a pain in the foot or leg is an emergnecy warranting a trip to A&E.

Most A&E depts are overwhelmed by people who shouldn't be there in the first place - and you sound like one of them.

If the pain persists for more then a few days or for up to a week then get it investigated, but don't go off to A&E at the first little sign of pain.

    Indeed.

Had the OP felt the need to go to an emergency vet immediately after the incident it would have been understandable (even if it was unnecessary with the benefit of hindsight).

However, once they waited several days it is far harder to argue it was an emergency and if it was by then, it was partly of the OP's making for choosing to delay.
