In this age of essentially unlimited computing power available in your pocket, pretty sure there's enough smarts in your motor to work out what some flashing lights and the word "SCHOOL" mean WRT speed limits.user1977 said:
It also can't read any context e.g. a 20 limit which only applies when the schooltime flashing lights are on, the 50 limit on the single carriageway bits of the A9 which only apply to HGVs, etc.prowla said:wongataa said:flaneurs_lobster said:Forgive my ignorance of these things - is the car detecting/deducing the speed limit by using a camera to read road signs / look for street lights or are the limits predefined, downloaded and applied by GPS like Waze etc.
The car reads the road signs. But it can misread them, for example if you approaching a bend on a main road where there is a turnoff which has a sign for its speed limit.I had this happen on the weekend: I was going along a 40 or 50 main road and there was a junction into a road with a 30 sign. There's a 20 school sign on my road, except they often forget to switch it off; it's sometimes been left on over the school holidays. So the smarts needs to extend to the Council too!0 -
FYI, this is the dashboard of my car on a 30 road...
...note the red circle speed limit displayed. The car hasn't got the smarts to know that there are no public roads with an 80 mph limit in the UK.Actually, it's along the road from the leftmost exit off the Finchampstead roundabout, so maybe the car got totally confused and threw a wobbly!EDIT: Seems like even the picture of it makes tech go wrong (image now removed)! Thanks for the msgs, folks!

What makes you think that anything's been forgotten? Maybe the local residents enjoy the respite for a few hours a day. There's a 20 school sign on my road, except they often forget to switch it off; it's sometimes been left on over the school holidays. So the smarts needs to extend to the Council too!
Not going to spoil your day doing 10mph less for a hundred yards is it?
How dare the Local Authority not prioritise the needs of the motorist over every other street user.1 -

How dare the Local Authority not prioritise the needs of the motorist over every other street user.Well - that was a rather confrontational reply. But anyway...I am a local resident; it's across the road from my house and the flashing lights go on all night when it happens. As for the motorists, the ones who speed along there don't pay any attention to it at all. Some might postulate that having the sign flashing outside of school hours simply gives people an excuse to ignore it.It wasn't on today, but I was out front putting the bins out and someone did a good 60 along the road in a Fiesta and squealed their tyres going through a traffic calming chicane.

Looking out of the window didn’t help me avoid a speeding ticket on a long country road with the only 30 mph sign on the approach to a roundabout on a bypass.TooManyPoints said:Use the Waze phone app to display a map and speed limit on your car screen.Better still, look out of the window. I understand the authorities place these large signs with numbers on them to indicate where a speed limit changes.
Unfortunately, councils are not required to place reminder signs in a 30 limit. The road in question is a real cash cow for the North Yorkshire camera vans. On the speed awareness course the instructor said he also uses Waze, as I now do.
My car “beeps” and flashes the dashboard speed symbol, Waze also sounds an alarm, so one way or another I am now aware of the speed limit.
Actually 30 mph repeaters are not permitted by the Traffic Signs Regulations. However a system of street lighting does that job just about perfectly, as we all learned for our driving test.........1 -
Apologies, wasn't meant to be - just thought this thread was getting a bit Top Geary. Will insert smiley next time.Well - that was a rather confrontational reply.
Re the picture of your dash - I love a gadget and a bit of tech, me, but that design is dreadful - looks like the status bar from a game of Doom circa 1995. Have you got used to it? Can it be customised, a bit of culling and some colour might help.
BMW 3 Series? (I Google Lensed).

BMW 3 Series? (I Google Lensed).:-)Yes - it's a 2019 3-series; I have to say I really like the dash and find it quite intuitive. The car has 3 modes "Comfort", "Sport", and "Eco" and the display changes accordingly: I occasionally use Eco on the motorway (blue theme), but I can't say it particularly does much; the Sport one goes more red and the car gets more responsive but I harldy use that.I looked at getting a newer one a couple of years ago, but the revised curved display which combines the dah and satnav looks like an afterthought and that plus another issue put me off so I kept mine.

Plenty of 30 repeaters round here, often attached to streetlights.RandomTourist said:

But that's with a default urban 20.1 -
Some Toyotas had issues with their cars reading limits in kph and picking up signs from the rear of lorries, I think they had them recalibrated at the dealers but I’m not sure if the op can get this checked under warranty…1
