Electric Cars: Are they Really Worth it? (Ch5)

EV's only account for around 4% of the cars on the roads. Average age of a car on the roads is around 9 years old. Speaks volumes for the fact that those with money are more likely to already own or opt to drive an EV (i.e. company lease).born_again said:
I bought Hev at 1 year old, sold at 3 years old.Hoenir said:

My math
Kia Niro Hybrid 16,400 miles, cost in Petrol £2,108,83
Kia E-Niro 11,183 miles, cost in electric £209.15
OK so just over 5K less in E-Niro. So that's just another £100.
Got to love home 7p charging.
As to these programs. Load a rubbish & paid for by whoever wants to get their point across.
EV is just the same as a ICE, weather, driving style all effect range.
Kia Niro Hybrid base cost new OTR - £29,865
Kia E-Niro base cost new OTR - £37,270
OK so just over 7.5K less for the ICE
Load a rubbish & paid for by whoever wants to get their point across.
In the real world EV prices are beyond the budget of the average person.
E-niro was 3 years old.
E-Niro cost less than HEV.
Cost of running is a the main thing to me. depreciation is something all cars suffer from.
Define average person?
No great surprise that second values hold up currently. Even more so considering some 1:5 are Tesla's. Which reduces the availability and choice of second hand options even further.
When the high tech starts going wrong and requires replacing in a 10 year old vehicle. What are the maintenance costs going to be like? Tesla, for example, are around £165 per hour labour as well. Little chance of DIY or your local back street garage being viable.
I'm not anti EV. Simply try and view the matter on a far broader longer term perspective. Otherwise there'll be a half way house position reached. Which won't be satisfactory for anyone. Whatever mode of car they decide to purchase.

How did garages manage when cars went from points to electronic ignition, then when ECU's appeared.Hoenir said:When the high tech starts going wrong and requires replacing in a 10 year old vehicle. They adapted.
Just the same now there are HEVRA garages springing up & garages that will strip & repair batteries.
EV's are already passed 10 years & still running. So servicing & repairs are not a big issue, running gear is just the same as a ICE.
Just like batteries lifespan is not a issue, it was thought.
The more EV's sold they greater encouragement for garages to train staff & adapt to them.Life in the slow lane0 -
I thought the whole point of running an ev was the relatively cheap running casts, charging from home with a dedicated wall box and using cheap rate electricity, I would be unable to do either without extra expenses of running a cable to my garage instead having to use a 3 pin plug or public charging, my hybrid is atm returning 66mpg on a motorway run, even more around town, I would like an ev, but I’m not sure I’d save much in running costs..0

You don't need a wall box to get an EV tariff.Alanp said:... charging from home with a dedicated wall box and using cheap rate electricity, I would be unable to do either without extra expenses
If that's petrol at £1.30 a litre, 66mpg is 9p a mile. I'm assuming a mild / self-charging hybrid so no plugging in.Alanp said:, my hybrid is atm returning 66mpg on a motorway run, even more around town,
Mrs QrizB's VW is getting about 140 miles from 35kWh at present (it was less, around 100 miles, in the depths of winter). Without an EV tariff, 25p/kWh works out as 6.3p/mile. With an EV tariff, 7p/kWh is 1.8p/mile.Alanp said:I would like an ev, but I’m not sure I’d save much in running costs..

This guy has just swapped the battery in his Leaf on his drive. It's not exactly rocket science.Hoenir said:

Add in HEVs, and 46%.( SOLD ) very interesting term. From what I've seen in the media, You tube etc, Most EV'S are lease cars or pre reged cars.Count as sold but that's not quite true. You only need to look at auto trader. 2022/2023/2024 pre reg EV'S with 10 miles are everywhere.I'm not knocking EV'S, but there are so many lies on both sides. When I was young I watched so many car on fire on the motorway, Petrol mainly as diesel does not burn as well. Now It's EV'S in the news.I loved driving my mates MG ZS EV, I test drove the MG HS PHEV & MG S5 a few weeks back.He want a new car, well the wife does.Would not mind either as my car.If I have a driveway when I buy a property in 2.5 yeas and can get a charger, The MG S5 would be my pick.As of today the MG S5 can be had for with saving of £6,299 off retail price. So £27,255.I would be down the dealers with this quote to beat them over the head with it. See if they would match it.Part ex my car and £20k would get me a new car.

Actual finance method is separate. Lease, PCP, cash all included.
Yes, some may be pre-reg... but they're going to be sold as pre-reg. There aren't fields and fields and fields of pre-reg cars that will never find a home, regardless of fuel source. That'd be silly.0 -
Yeah, but what is that cheap Chinese EV going to be like after six years and 238,000 miles, eh? Oh... actually it'll be fineBigwheels1111 said:I loved driving my mates MG ZS EV, I test drove the MG HS PHEV & MG S5 a few weeks back.He want a new car, well the wife does.Would not mind either as my car.If I have a driveway when I buy a property in 2.5 yeas and can get a charger, The MG S5 would be my pick.As of today the MG S5 can be had for with saving of £6,299 off retail price. Autotrader.
Search nationally
Fuel: Electric
Mileage: <500
2025: 6,518 of which 1,291 are pre-reg
2024: 507
2023: 79
2022: 31
2021: 2 - and one of those is actually a 37k mile Merc EQC that it's picking the range up in the search thanks to fat fingers on the seller's part... The other is a Q4 e-Tron and is being sold as approved-used.
This is not unique to EVs. There are also 1,121 2024 delivery mileage petrol/diesels, 126 2023, 29 2022...2
