Car will take a year to repair - what can I do?

Hi,

Bought a Kia EV6 from carsa in January,

Started with an issue last week, long story short took to an authorised Kia dealer who have been very good, diagnosed that the main battery needs replaced. It's on back order and they have said honestly, it will be a year!

Not ideal - Gona sort me with a hire car next week. Prob not an EV which isn't ideal as I got this to save on fuel with home charging etc

What can I do realistically? Suck it up - any scope for Kia buying it back?

A year seems excessive but I believe it, I had a car written off during COVID for being unable to source parts for a year +

I assume no comeback with carsa, (turns out there was outstanding recalls also, the Kia dealer made me aware of this)

Any insight/advice appreciated

Go back to CARSA & reject the car.
Kia won't buy it back, as you did not buy from them.
How did you pay for the car?

Cars paid cash essentially, an interest free loan from the energy saving trust.

I don't see carsa doing much as it's more than 3 months since I bought it from them, and the main battery issue I have no way of proving existed when I bought it. And to be fair it's drove perfectly until now.

If it's within 6 months, then carsa are still responsible unless they can show that you broke the car.

They can offer a repair, refund or replacement.  But it sounds like they will have no way to repair it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Was not aware of this, 3 months was all I thought, because they called me after 3 months asking if I wanted to take out extended (said no as Kia's have 7 years manufacturer it didn't make sense)

They definitely can't repair it, the high voltage system require a Kia master tech and the part is on backorder for a year basically.

If I get a decent hire vehicle I'm willing to wait the year because a new EV battery is like getting a new engine free in my eyes. But if I'm going to be worse off I'll need to take it up with someone so I'll call carsa next week when I know more.

I assume Kia is paying for the hire vehicle because it's a warranty repair? If so you maybe want to talk to them and suggest it may be cheaper for them to source you another car. A years worth of hire car is going to cost a fortune.

They aren't obligated to, the dealer is sorting it and I assume they bill Kia. I was assured it wouldn't cost me anything. Will get more detail on Monday!

In future stick with standard petrol/diesel cars.

    Word of caution.
Though Kia is being very helpful, you need to be aware what size/etc the free hire car is and if it is
similar or better than your car.

This is important. A year is a long time, and you will end up with kerbed wheels, possibly due to fools driving dangerously and you having to avoid them and/or parking etc. Along with vandal damage and careless/jealous people that will just crash their banger/cars door into yours in car parks etc. So be aware of what you may need to pay when you had the car back, along with any mileage restrictions, etc etc,

I would post over on the Kia Ev6 board on the SpeakEV forum. Kia appear to be well known for long lead time on their cars repaired (and not just EVs) but 1 year seems exceedingly excessive.
