i am actually very lucky with mu hubby. as he will eat any brand as long as he likes it.
he never relly liked baked beans as his mum is a snob and only buys heniz. but he loves tesco value ones, as the sauce isn't so rich.
the only request my hubby does have is that i buy a semi-decent cut of beef when roast, ie topside or silverside.and steak mince as he like me hates to find any hard gritty lump's.
but i can live with that, as i don't cook it very often at mo ,as since being preg i've gone right off roast beef.
if my hubby goes shopping he will buy whatever brand i ask and if he not sure then he will buy value.
bless him .0 -
i throw in a handful of pinhead oatmeal to bol sauce, or stewed mince or whatever I'm cooking. OH has never noticed - he would not be a porridge or oats eater! This way, everyone gets stuff which is good for their heart AND the mince goes further. I also add soya mince as someone else has said, + grated carrot and sliced mushrooms if i have them. I use tinned tomatoes and if they are cheapie ones i'll squirt in some tomato sauce or put in a spoonful of chutney of some kind if I have it. Does anyone add water/stock? I put in at least half a pint and a stock cube. makes a massive pan of chilli or bolognese sauce compared to the amount of mince you start with. This week i even added quinoa flakes which i had in the cupboard as i found that the soya mince (organic) was out of date and i didn't want to risk upset stomachs just before New Year! Some at the table are staunch meat eaters who will never know that a quinoa flake passed their lips
Sounds like me, i chuck anything in! Bolognese, chilli, stew, casseroles, soups - i never make anything the same twice, it all depends on what i have in at the time and what needs using up.
And did you know that Himself has NEVER eaten lentils?! He's not a tree hugger apparantly. "Of course you're not my love.... they're just in the bolognese, chilli, lasagne, carrot and coriander soup etc that you love so much and praise to high heaven!"
The way i see it is that yes we could have all the branded things but the money we save by not doing is free for other things like our monthly takeaway, beer for OH, wine for me (not at the moment, sob sob!) so we can chill out and enjoy our weekends.

i buy ground steak mince healthy living at tesco and it is £1.89 a bag for 500g and it does 8 portions of spag bol for us.no fat every comes out of this
I would use double that amount of mince for 8 people, do you bulk it out with anything?. How many children are included in your number of servings?? I would love to save on meat.Penny xxx

Hello Charleybabes
Just thinking if you are going to try making white sauce. Why not buy a really large tin of tuna (the larger the can the cheaper per grm) or find a bogof and double the quantity of white sauce add some grated cheese to make a cheese sauce and add tuna for a lovely fish pie. Top with mashed pots or breadcrumbs and cheese. If I remember I used to add paprika to the cheese mix and it was lovely.0 -
>...I also do the white sauce by guesswork
I just heat up some milk (the amount of milk you use gives that amount of sauce roughly) and thicken it by adding some cornflour mixed with water - I start with about a heaped tea spoon and then add more till it's thick enough. Just add the cornflour and water as you stirr, keep stirring and then you end up with "thick milk" which is all white sauce really is. You can flavour it by adding salt, peper, cheese, nutmeg etc. If it goes lumpy then I just blend it with one of those hand held things. You can also add a dollup of utter to make it nicer.0 -
well ive been shopping and ive not done to bad,
it does look like ive gone over my budget a lot but i bought things like more nappies so that next week we wont have to buy any and we are having family round on sunday so bought more potatos and veg than we normally would
i did manage to get things like my tuna cheaper going from £2.98 down to £1.99 and juice from £2.08 to 99p also the toilet paper from £1.68 to 79p and 2 bottles of washing up liquid for £1 which wasnt on my original list but we were coming to the end of ours and this way we're set for a few weeks now as they are quite big bottles!
i got these from a cheapo freezer shop by my house
then i popped into somerfield and bought lean mince for 2 packs for £4 instead of the £6 i was going to spend
i had to add some more onto my list like fabric softener ( i know most people dont use it but i love the smell)
i also had to spend more on my pepper as they didnt have any smart price so it cost £1.82  but it is a big jar and will last ages and H wanted to buy olive oil so that put another £1.00 on the bill
i also bought some naan bread mix 2 bags for £1 which means i dont have to buy naan breads for a while i can just make my own
so my final total came in at £57.98
BUT THIS DOES MEAN THAT MY SHOPPING BILL NEXT WEEK WILL BE A LOT LESS !!!!!!!!!0 -
Oh And I Bought Two Tupperware Boxes At 92p Each But Am Taking Them Back Tomorrow So Thats Nearly Another £2 Off Bill To !0

Well done, whilst you have gone over this weeks total....no doubt when you look at January as a whole, you should be on budget.
Whilst I was out today, I got some Dove deodrant from boots...3-4-2 (and boots points)
I also got some Tresemm! shampoo in Wilkinsons, 900ml bottles BOGOF.
I do already have some of both 'in stock' but probably not enough to last until the next offer comes along.
And very moneysaving....taking things back.... :eek:Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
........and 2 bottles of washing up liquid for £1 which wasnt on my original list
charleybabes, have you got an empty handwash pump or similar? I always put my washing up liquid in one of these and add one third water to two thirds liquid. The dispenser makes it easy to measure how much you use. If the bubbles are disappearing whilst you are washing up just put a spot more liquid on the sponge rather than squirting a load more into the water.
You'll be amazed how much longer these bottles will last you!!
