  • Quick easy non lumpy recipe for white sauce.
    1 pint milk
    1 heaped tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon butter or butter substitute
    Salt and pepper to taste.

Put all ingredients in blender or food processor. Blend. Pour mixture into saucepan. Cook on medium heat until thickened. Double quantities to save fuel and freeze second quantity. Anything can be added to basic recipe. Parsley for parsley sauce. Cheese (I add about 4 oz to one pint milk but tastes vary). For more flavour bring milk to boil with a few peppercorns parsley stalks sliced onion and leave to soak for about 1 hour. Strain milk and use as above for fresh.

    Hope this helps
  • Sorry forgot to say you must stir sauce to prevent sticking and lumps. Silly old me!
  • i know a few people have left you a white sauce recipe but i will leave mine too i have never been able to make lasagne until a few weeks ago i was at a healthy eating course run at my kids school and it was great and now i can make it woo hoo

the sauce she gave us was this

    1 pint milk
    2oz ( 110g) butter
    2oz (110g or 2 heaped tbs ) plain flour

put all ingredients in a pan over a gentle heat and whisk continuously until the sauce comes to simmering point and thickens
after that season to taste with salt and pepper and i found even though i do not like Parmesan a little bit of Parmesan mixed it made it perfect for lasgane

i bulk my mince out with a good handful of grated carrot and a few spoons of those red lentils - these cook down and can't be seen in the mince, even oh who is v fussy will eat this. a good way of getting extra protein for very little cost

    Hi Charleybabes

I recently watched a programme with Martin in that suggested to drop down by one brand in your shopping on each of your items. This can save money in a big way.

I.e instead of heinz, try supermarkets own etc.

  • hi all

thanks ever so much for all your ideas.. im looking forward to my trip now!!!

im going to have a go at making my own white sauce

as regards brand names i try not to buy to many its my H he is a bit of a food snob hence the reason we are in this mess now!!!
i dont eat baked beans but he will only eat heinz so its just not worth buying cheap brands as it will go to waste. and we are buying these for his lunch for work instead of him buying off the butty wagon!!
. but i will buy the cheap ones for my son as he can have beans on toast for his lunches
i used to eat the really cheap tuna a few years ago and it use to knock me sick.. i will buy the asdas own .. the one up from sp brand.

When I make chilli now, I stretch it out with an assortment of beans - the dried ones will be cheapest, but require you to be organised, so I use tins which are still very cheap.

A packet of mince that used to make two portions now makes 8-10 portions (the rest go in the freezer), and my husband doesn't even notice as long as there is some meat in it.

I used to have the problem that i was proud of saving money and would tel OH how much i had saved. He just sees cheaper + yuck so used to complain he only liked heinz etc.

While there a couple of things i haven't been able to get round I find that not mentioning naything is different means he doesn't notice!!!!
