afternoon everyone

well ive been lurking on this for a few days now after realising that me and H have to really tighten our belts this year..
after a serious overspend this year we are in a bit of amess so need to cut back on lots and actually start saving and budgeting

we have a few pasta bake type meals in the cupboard that will last us until thursday when H gets paid and we can go food shopping again
ive worked out that our budget should be about £40 for food..
i dont want us to have a real frugal shop with no nice things in nor do i want to go mad and buy junk

would you have any ideas for me on what i could buy for a weeks shop for me and H and my 18mnth old

thanks all
hope to be able to contribute somthing positive soon to you all as well

Look out for meat - buy two for £5 sort of offers especially things like mince and you can make chilli con carne/shepherds pie etc for the freezer. (I make my own fishcakes out of tinned salmon or tuna which is on offer and left over mash which is a cheap meal)

Pasta and rice are good staples and go with most foods.
  • thanks for the suggestions.. i hadnt thought about fishcakes..
    are these easy to make??...

I made some fishcakes yesterday with a tin of red salmon I had in the cupboard, added the same amount (roughly) of leftover mashed potatoes, salt and pepper, lots of chopped parsley and a couple of teaspoons of chopped capers, then rolled in some HM dried breadcrumbs I also had lurking in the cupboard before frying, and they were really nice. I get a bit bored with the ones with just fish and potato, the herbs and capers spiced the mixture up nicely. I find they are better cooked quite slowly with very little oil, or they tend to disintegrate a bit and taste too fatty.

I don't put capers in mine. I then freeze them and bake from frozen when I need them - you can make them whatever size you want.

Bags of frozen mixed veg are a godsend too as we're always wasting the fresh stuff. It goes with pretty much all meals and is a good mix of peas, sweetcorm, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans.
  • Hi,

me and Oh have found that buying meat really does drain the budget. You'll be surprised how much money you save and how much healthier you feel if you only eat meat a couple of times a week. Lots of stir fries and veggie stews are great.

    LOL.

Soup is cheap and easy, I try to have some on the go all the time, as any leftovers can be chucked in-also a good way of using up odds and ends from the cupboards.
  • please!!!

ive been on the asda website and after working out my meal plans for the week which are

home made lasagne ( apart from the white sauce which will be shop bought)

home made chilli and rice ( dont need to buy rice got tons in the cupboard)

home madespag boll ( dont need to buy the spaghetti)

roast chicken dinner ( which we are having my sister and bro in law plus
nephew and niece over for aswell )

turkey curry and rice( using up a jar thats in my cupboard)

jacket potato with either left over chilli or tuna mayo depends on what type of mood im in

tuna flat wraps ( when we dont fancy cooking and want more of a snacky tea)

ive put a weeks worth in plus some essentials like nappies and milk etc
could you have a quick look at it and just let me know if there are ways i could do it cheaper or if its ok for my first week at budgeting
this is for me and my H plus our 18month old little boy to so some of the things can be used for his lunches in the week aswell

  • Hello. Passata- is that the tomatey stuff? if so use your puree and tinned toms, in fact I don't even buy puree any more I just reduce down my sauce by gently simmering, thickens it up. Hope you buy value tomatoes? I can't tell the difference. I'm trying to reduce my food bill also. Good luck!
