It might be worth buying a second hand refurbished one this time if it dies before you pay your debts off.

I was skint last summer and my old iphone was running out of battery after only an hour or two. I went on b@ckmarket and bought a new to me less ancient iphone rated as excellent with a battery guaranteed for 12 months. They gave me a refund on my dodgy phone so £152 paid out and once I was happy with it I sent my old one in for £21 so only paid £131. It's guaranteed until July and was good value. So many people trade their new phone in very quickly you might find a bargain too?

  • Saturday overtime. I’ll put 3/4 of the money towards debt and the rest towards something fun. Unfortunately I won’t get it for a month and a half.

I might trade in my phone. As long as you can send it back later. I need to keep it to copy the apps over.

Mr Unsuitable is messaging me fairly regularly. I’m not sure we’ll see each other for a while. I hope he’s finished his tax return. I’m not sure if he claims things like shoes for work. He works outside. He has an art degree from the same university as me but a few years before.

I’ve more or less decided not to enrol on a Geography degree in the autumn. I’d be paying back about £30 a month once I finished and I am on quite tight margins. I’m an impulse shopper. I have stated keeping a list of things I didn’t buy. As it’s the second half of the month the list is growing slowly. It’s an idea I got from a managing money course I bought. It cost around £40. I won’t tell you all the tips.

My dream is to have a £3000 emergency fund and scope to save up for a new boiler.

I had a letter saying they are doing the water works end January. There will be no water for 2 days and then I have to pay £700. Hopefully not more. I can find that. Need to find out if my gym has a shower and if not shower at my sisters. I can have a shower at work.

Off to the gym quickly now.

Before you spend any money on courses, there's so many free ones out there - check out Open Learn which is OU, Future Learn and there are others.  You could have got a free money course on open learn, and it's done by this site!

  • On holiday for a week. I’m trying not to think about work. Mainly I need to do my studying. I’ll have a shower and go and do it in a minute.

    The weather is beautiful.

I’m feeling like I can’t drink enough coffee at the moment.

I’m struggling at work because everyone is a bit bitchy and as I’m new I’m one of the weakest in the team. The new temp is also really good. I’ve done 4 months. At least 8 more to go.

  • Up and at it. Need to head to the post office. Got some new jeans off Olio which are French Connection. They are absolutely gorgeous and I’m going to wear them to death.

Going to go and see mum this week. I’m not taking my knitting so we shall get out and about and do house jobs. There have been mentions of the wood shed needing its roof mending. Great. She’s taking me out for dinner for my birthday present.

Mr Unsuitable is being quiet. I think I upset him by saying I would leave him alone for the day yesterday. He has another bad tooth and is basically in agony. The next dentist appointment he could get was at the beginning of February. I know you’re not supposed to get political on these boards so I won’t say anything else.

My little niece and great niece are ok.

  • So dear diary.

I’m going to come clean with you as I believe in telling the truth. Things have come to a head and I’m away at my mum’s for a week with only £18 left in my overdraft. The only reason why I had that is because my mum told me to get a bus from the station as her car wasn’t fixed and I had to fess up I had no money to get the bus and could she lend me £20. It was embarrassing.

I will do better next month.

I’m only paying £200 off my debt next month (would be £100 but it’s a free council tax month).

It’s a long hard slog to get to be debt free.

    No big ticket items.

If you tackle it now it won’t be a long hard slog; it will be short term pain for long term gain
If you continue to bury your head in the sand it will become a bigger problem and a long hard slog
Hopefully your embarrassing situation is your light bulb moment 🤞
Read back through the posts in this diary; lots of people trying to help you; we’ve all been in same and worse situation.

  • Financially (I"m going by your SOAs here) you're in the fortunate posituon where you could make short work of your debt and have a 2-month emergency fund by Christmas, if you chose to.

Changing a mindset is a long, hard slog though and I have a lot of empathy for it and I'm sure many others on these boards do too. It takes a mix of big picture thinking for motivation and micro goals to keep you going. Carve somw time out fron the busy world to really think about what's important to you, how you got to wherr you are (the good and the bad) and where you want to be. Let a clear vision develop - it might take some time, I did a 40 day social media 'fast' - and then start stepping towards it. Good luck x
