Did you try the suggestion of creating a hotspot on your phone and that will create a place you can connect to just like you connect to your router

it would at least eliminate if the router is the culprit

I didnt try that. i dont know if i can or how to create a hotspot on phone. will try now and find out
Edit. ok tried that, not seeing the wifi hotspot on my laptop.
Must be some sort of hardware issue with my wifi card or antenna cables.
I'm going to get a wifi dongle as suggested, thanks

Google HP pavilion drivers and go to the HP website.  You can search by various methods for your laptop to download the latest drivers.

It's strange that the WiFi seems to be working but not picking up any networks at all.

I have already tried to update drivers for the network adaptor.
Was all working fine until yesterday evening. Then lost the connection, only appears intermittently since and seems a very weak signal when it does, then looses it again, even though i'm right beside router.

Regarding the wifi dongle, i see some sayin wifi 6 and to make sure router is wifi 6 standard?
I'm currently using plusnet Hub 1 router (quite old), but next week i'm switching to Sky (getting FF installed) and Sky is sending a 4.2 router.
Just want to make sure the dongle will work with the Sky router

Could be that the cable has come loose. If you're confident enough, you should be able to take the back off. As well as screws, they're usually clipped in and requires a bit of brute force to prise the lid off.  The little WiFi unit has 2 antennas clipped in. One might have come loose

Checked that also earlier, re-seated the wifi card too
