So it does detect a signal sometimes, but it's pathetically weak. Perhaps the internal wifi antenna has disconnected itself.
You could pop it open and check the connections: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/HP+Pavilion+g6-1b79dx+Wireless+Card+Replacement/510503 -
Had the same problem recently, was caused by of all things the graphics adapter driver having been updated.
Had 2 adapters standard intel and another one disabled the non intel one and hey presto all my wifi came back.
If you only have one graphic adapter try rolling the driver back and rebooting, You can thank me later !"Didn't I try to Warn them I said !"

Try uninstalling the WiFi adapter and do a restart.
If you create a hotspot off your phone, does it detect it?
You could try installing Hp support assistant/ HP diagnostic0 -
