in Credit cards
Hi all, I'm going to Mauritius tomorrow and I'm going to take my nationwide member credit card as back up. If I use it should I pay in Mauritius rupees?
New to taking credit card abroad.
Many thanks

Always pay local currency, do not allow them to use DCC, keep the machine to make sure payment is done and they can't change it
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Yes, as above, always pay in local currency and let your card do the exchange for you. That way you'll get the Visa/Mastercard exchange rate, which is near enough the best rate an ordinary consumer can get. If you let the retailer convert to GBP for you, they'll usually use an exchange rate that's to their advantage.Does your card charge an FX fee for non-GBP transactions (a lot of them do) ? It'll be too late for this trip, but for future reference it's worth considering one of the "travel" credit card that doesn't charge an FX fee. If you're not going to be spending a lot then the fees might not add up to a great amount, but obviously it's nicer not to have to pay a fee at all if you can.0

Thanks very much. No the nationwide member card doesn't charge to convert, unlike my other card. Was the reason I got the nationwide one. I didn't realise to make sure they keep the machine with you, so thanks for that. If I use it, it will only be for excursions.
Thanks again0 -
