I think the guy offering the Baxi wants to use a buffer tank.

From a Clivet (rebadged midea) owner, just some observations. The 8kW baxi unit is a few hundred more expensive than the 8kW clivet from what I can see, for what is presumably a very similar unit. Perhaps the after sales support might be better? Might be worth looking into in terms of what baxi are like in general.

Secondly, what controls are they proposing? Agree with others that this is quite key to establish as the units themselves are all pretty similar. There are 3rd party controls which are supposedly enhanced weather comp in that they take into account weather forecasts as well as OAT, and can also adapt heating schedules according to cost dips (e.g. Octopus cosy tariff). Thus, it would definitely be worth asking (a) what controls as above, and (b) whether you might be missing out on decent controls if the baxi lacks compatibility (for example something like homely). I can confirm that the rebadged midea controls are pretty basic and I wouldn't want to wholly rely on them.

The quote I got also had the option of the Vaillant aroTherm pump (but not cylinder) for £1000 more. Is it worth it?

The SCOP on the Vailllant is supposedly 5.03.

It will be a scop up to 5.03. Its performance is on a par with other cheaper ashps at the usual design temps of 50, 45 or whatever your system is being designed to.

from what I could ascertain the after sales from vaillant is good. It can run at flow temps up to 75 rather than 60 odd that other ashps can achieve but why would you want to go that high. For us it was 2k more than the equivalent clivet and we were struggling to justify it.
