Always check the ingredients, alot of items are cheap becuase they contain Hydrogenated Oils if you dont know what they are then its worth reading this http://www.tfx.org.uk/

The main problem area flagged up was the 'value supermarket' sector (not the UK supermarkets' 'value' brands which comply with their low-trans policies) which import cheap produce from abroad which may contain hydrogenated oil. So if you shop in Aldi, Netto or similar shops, exercise caution

    Hmmm...another quote from that article...

"The tfX view is that the UK should adopt either the Danish standard, or an updated version of the Danish standard with a lower 1 percent maximum."

So, presumably they're saying that Netto - a DANISH company - produce special high-transfat products for sale in the UK? I don't think so!

And it would be interesting to compare CHD statistics for Denmark (Netto), Germany (Aldi/Lidl) and the UK. I'm not a betting man, but I'd hazard a guess that the UK would be at the top!

So I think I'll go on getting my cold meats, cheeses and other decadent items from Lidl, etc.

Im just pointing out that many items that they sell contains Hydrogonated oils which they do, the items are inported from Europe into the UK not just from Denmark, if you read the article it says all hydrogonated oils in the uk will be full hydrgonated which is ok as this is the system the food industry in the UK has adopted.

Its up to you what you eat but if it contains hydrogonated oils they you cant guaranteed they are full hydrognated if imported from Europe.

I think a lot of it is false economy. I think it was Jaffa Cakes I noticed were dearer at Lidl and they were either mishapes or a smaller pack, can't remember.

The only things I buy from Lidl are fireworks, their rockets are brilliant! Last Bonfire night I bought some from Lidl and some from Homebase, the Homebase ones were poo but the Lidl ones were really good and cheap too.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

Their curry sauces are very nice (something like 69-79p) and seem about half the price of other supermarkets. I reccommend them.

remember those of you who have not yet signed up, go to lidls/aldis/nettos website and sign up for their offer e-mails. Even though ive signed up to nettos but dont receive them.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

Yes we bought these Jaffa cakes and they are a lot smaller in size than originals. My son says they taste nice though.

Previous to my recent visit to Lidl I went to Tesco and wrote down the prices of my usual shopping bag items and went to Lidl to compare.

Most items were more expensive at Lidl than at Tesco (ok - a few were Tesco items were "value" range, but the quality is comparable to Lidl)

Also considering the nature of the shop - having to open boxes etc yourself, lack of shopping baskets, losing out on cash-back as they're not taking credit cards, not offering loyalty points, charging for plastic bags, I see no benefit in going to Lidl any longer.

Are you talking about branded items or own-brand items though? Branded products are usually no cheaper but other items can be a lot cheaper for much better quality.

And I always find that people are p***d off at you if you have a big trolleyload and keep trying to push past if they only have a few items.

That seems to be a Lidl (and to a lesser extent, Aldi)-specific cultural thing; I've been on the other end of that (i.e just a couple of items), gone to take my normal place in the queue and been waved in front by someone with a trolley-full of shopping.

Lidl nappies are great value - they are as good as pampers (the baby dry ones) and all the supermarkets ones and are only £5 for a big pack. The same size pack in tesco is about £7.
