we are going to budget seriously this year
ive started my meal plans and have worked out our weekly budget ( my h gets paid weekly so we have to do it like this)
now we usually shop at asda but i was thinking about trying different places aswell to get all the bargains..
we popped into aldi this week but i didnt think that a lot of it was any more cheaper than asda
i just wondered if anyone shopped at lidl, if its any cheaper than aldi and asda and what is the quality like

Apart from their fresh fruit and veg, which leaves a little to be desired, I would say their quality is pretty good. We used to do our big shop at Mr T and I would say that overall, Lidl is about a third cheaper. However, the range and varieties of their stuff is not nearly as wide.
Definitely worth a try.A friend is someone who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden.0 -

Lidl is good but like all shops has real bargains to attract you but other things are same as elsewhere.....things also go on and off offer very quickly so you have to be careful......I find their bread flour cheap @48p (on offer @ 38p atm). They also have weeks when all fruit and veg is half price....tinned toms and passata are excellent quality and cheap.
I find things change so quickly it is always worth checking the offers online before you go.....

My top tip is to remember to ring your own bags as they charge for theirs plus they don't take credit cards or cheques!
I have been caught out by both those things!0 -
Hi charleybabes,
Welcome to MSE:hello:
These threads on the Shop but Don't drop board should help:
All Things Lidl
What does everyone think of Lidl and Aldi?
What's hot and what's not at Aldi/Lidl/Netto Article Discussion Area
I'll move your thread across to that board shortly.

I shop at Asda too but find Lidl great for staples like flour and tinned toms/passata as already said. They also have very tasty sliced meats for sandwiches which are much cheaper. I'd just try a few things out and mix and match between the two shops as I find I still save money that way.Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...0

go and have a look around one day - its the best way to find out. I only pop in occassionally, but when I do stock up on a few staples.
Oilve oil is often a very good buy, as is tinned tomatoes/pasata/other tinned goods.
I haven't tried their frozen fish - but friends swear by it.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
A lot of the things which don't seem to be cheaper - eg wafer thin sliced meats - are of a higher quality then their British equivelent in other supermarkets. Their ham etc has little or no water added and a minimum of preservatives so you are getting a more nourishing product for your cash, and one which will not shrink as much when cooked.
Having a smaller choice of items can help impulse buyers to control their spending as well, and I do tend to find that I can get around the shop in half the time I do when I go to Tesco or Sainsburys because it's so much easier to find stuff.0 -
