Missed flight

I am really getting old!!!

I was supposed to fly out yesterday with Emirates but for some reason thought my flight is today. My travel agent said that rebooking fee is more than half what I paid. If I cancel, I will only get £35 back. My return flight in a few week's time will also be cancelled as I was a no show.

Can I now take travel insurance or do something else to at least get a 50% refund?

Thanks.

You chose to book non refundable flights. There's no entitlement unfortunately for self inflicted no shows.

Insurance won't cover bad diary management or memory lapses.

Have sympathy though, did turn up at the train station for a long journey and realised I'd forgotten my wallet which had both the train tickets in and my credit card so no tickets and no mechanism to buy a replacement.

You won't be able to insure against something that has already happened and getting your date wrong would not be an insurable event...I am assuming you already have travel insurance for the trip (would be crazy to travel without these days) but have found it does not cover you.
I am guessing you have a Saver ticket which is non-refundable after departure time...so refund would be taxes less your agents fees
Looking at a random Emirates flight it appears for saver tickets no-show change fee is £200 + difference in fare, maybe you could find a flight that has a cheaper fare difference to reduce the rebooking cost

Human error, sadly unlikely to be covered by any travel insurance policy.
    We've all been there.
Hopefully you can salvage something positive.

    Apologies for resurrecting the thread.
The Travel agent is TRAVELUP. At the beginning of Ferbruary, they promised a £35 refund, which was to be issud after 4-6 weeks and since then mothing has happened and they no longer respond to my emails. The flight was £660 return.

Furthermore, I believe that I should get a refund on my APD on my return flight.

Looking at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-and-allowances-for-air-passenger-duty, Travelup should be giving me an APD refund of £214 X2 ?

how have you calculated that amount?
APD is only paid on the outbound flight departing from the UK - not the return leg
your flight would have been at the 2024 rates so either £88 Band B (2,001 to 5,500 miles) or £92 Band C (over 5,500 miles)
Travelups fees may cancel out most of the refundable amount

    '
Our administration fee. Where you cancel your confirmed booking, you must pay an administration fee to us of £75 per person (unless you have purchased a service pack, in which case the administration fee payable will be as per the terms of your chosen service pack). For all non-refundable airline tickets if the recoverable tax components are less than the administration charge the ticket will be deemed to be fully non-refundable. Any applicable tax refunds recovered from the supplier for non-refundable tickets will be issued in the form of a TravelUp electronic credit voucher, this will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue'

It is maybe possible the total taxes refundable is £110 which would explain the £35 they say you will get back

Thank you. That explains it. I am wondering if I should do a Credit card chargeback for the £35 they promised.

    No.

Looks as if you should have rebooked and gone on holiday. Now, instead of losing an extra £300, your loss has extended to £600 and no holiday.

Look at booking direct in the future, as the fee structure will be more easy to follow.
