why would you have an estimated cost (a guess) for a year that has already finished, actual cost could be higher or lower depending on meter readings...

Are you referring to @magpies79 consumption or the OP's ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

We'll see if they come back - my bet bet though is along with others - heaters left on in bedrooms, plus the combination of three people having showers and the immersion being on constantly so it just chitters away topping up all the time, then working harder for a spell after another shower has been had (possibly lengthy ones if this a household of all young adults on their first time away from home and responsible for bills). Add in all cooking at different times - and maybe one saying "Oh just leave the oven on- I'll be doing mine in a bit" then getting caught up gaming and not using the oven for another couple of hours...

This is almost impossible.  The only way it could happen that I can think of is if its a pressurised tank but the pressure vessel has failed so hot water is discharged from the tank via the tundish when the tank is heated.

There was a very sad case a few years ago where the thermostat on the immersion stuck. This caused the open vented cylinder to blow boiling water into the loft tank. Fresh water would then run from the loft tank into the cylinder and the process repeated.
Eventually the plastic loft tank got so hot that it softened and collapsed, allowing boiling water to escape the tank, through the ceiling and scalding a child who was sleeping below.
So it's unlikely, but not impossible. You'd expect to hear the water boiling in the tank before it became a serious problem, but it's not guaranteed.

    EssexHebridean illustrates.

I remember when my older sister used to constantly complain to me about her electricity bill being over triple mine.

The reason for it was that my younger sister lived with my older sister, and she would spend the majority of the day playing on a gaming PC (and used to sleep with games running, because she couldn't miss something). Unfortunately because of the heat generated by the gaming PC being on all day in a closed room, she had a mini fridge in her room to keep cold drinks as well as an air conditioning unit she left on pretty much 24/7 also.

If I'm understanding the OP correctly, he was paying £150 a month for 5 months (so £750) and has been asked to pay an additional £2700 (so an additional £540 per month), meaning an actual spend of £690 per month.

That's about 10x what I use (and I have an EV!), but it's not totally impossible if you combine 1 or 2 people behaving like my younger sister, with an immersion heater and ge@EssexHebridean.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear the OP is planning to action the points made by forum members so I suspect this thread will forever remain speculation.

Bit early to assume that, I'd have thought!  It's only been a day, there's SUCH a lot of information and questions to work through (especially for someone new to energy), they have probably been working (per a previous comment), and needing to coordinate with the others in the house as they also may be working / everyone in their own rooms / etc. - all means it'll take time.

That’s awful 😢. I have shared on here before I think that not long after we moved into our previous home, and having learned how the E7/immersion heater was best used, we went to bed as usual one night having switched it to heater overnight on the off peak rate (for the few days prior to that we’d just been using thr 1 hour boost). Some hours later we were woken by our VERY insistent cat - miaowing, pawing at us, utterly determined that we would wake up. On MrEH going out into the hallway to try to see what she was upset about he was greeted by a wall of steam and a VERY ominous bubbling noise…not only had the immersion oiled, but the water tank directly above it was also full of boiling water too… Cue him shouting to me to get up - NOW - and all three hot taps being switched on absolutely full at the same time as the fuse for the immersion being flipped.  Of course we realised that the thermostat must have been completely knackered, and the thermal cutout had either been bypassed or simply failed, we never worked out which. The guy who sold us the flat undoubtedly knew, but didn’t see fit to warn us - the plumber who came and replaced the thermostat for us said we were quite incredibly fortunate that we woke up as it could only have been a short time away from the whole thing literally going bang, from our description.  That cat got a LOT of dreamies the next day!
Knowing cats, did you 100% rule out the cat being involved in causing the issue? ;)
