FTTP doesn’t come from a ‘cab’ , but suffice to say there is an issue somewhere that Openreach need to fix , if there are Alt Nets in the area  , it may even be there is no duct space left in the Openreach ducts because the Alt Net has used up whatever space there was
As you ordered FTTP , even if there is an old dormant copper pair into your property, it’s irrelevant, it  cant be part of a full fibre provision, and they don’t install a copper connection temporarily if problems arise on a FTTP installation.

Its pretty clear you had a two stage installation, and in some respects it’s worked as it’s designed , a problem was discovered on the first stage , that enabled Openreach  to push out the second stage date , while the problem is addressed, hopefully you haven’t cancelled your Virgin service yet , in these cases where you are moving to a new network , it’s always worth keeping the old network ‘live’ until the new one is up and running, before  cancelling the old network, it may cost a little more ( paying for two networks for 1 month ) but at least there is no gap in service,

if your Virgin service is to be cancelled irrespective of your Vodafone service being available, then you obviously may be without any service for a while

Vodafone wanted to handle cancelling virgin

The install and change over date is a month away, and always was.

I don’t mind being without a connection for a few days. But if it turns into weeks, well who knows!

I guess I could cancel within the 14 days and sign up again if I see the ducting has been done for my neighbour.

Or try and sign up with copper

Personally not a fan of VF , but so far they haven’t done anything to complain about, if the FTTP installation date is a month away that’s time enough to sort out whatever issue exists in getting the optical cable to your house wall , cancelling and waiting to see how your neighbours installation goes is up to you , it may be unnecessary , but that’s your call .

What makes you think the equipment will be fitted in the kitchen ?, the CSP ( the external box ) location depends on if the address is served by underground means ( duct ) or overhead from a pole , with underground where the duct appears at the house wall is usually where the CSP is fitted , the ONT can be where you want it ( within reason ) , it doesn’t have to be directly behind the CSP , so if the CSP is on the wall outside the kitchen that doesn’t mean the ONT has to go inside the kitchen , there can be upto 30 metres of cable between the CSP and ONT
You can ask them to reroute to where you want the router to be.
In my case the master socket was behind the front door when open and with no room to place a table and with no available power supply it was a no go also the existing duct would have come through the front doorstep so not anywhere near a exterior wall.
I take the 30m would be mostly external wiring.
I was lucky I had a pavior path and not a newly laid bitmac driveway

I’m just wondering if I should put a custom cat6e cable in between router and ont to future proof.

Is cat6e always flat? Or can it be round?
Thinking of using some rj45 ends I already have.

Anyone know how long the power cable is on the ont?

AFAIR, the power lead is 1-2m in length so the ONT needs to be quite close to a power outlet , the OR installer won’t be bothered if it’s a ‘proper’ wall outlet , or an extension cord / lead , as long as the ONT can be powered up , if it’s on a temporary lead , that’s entirely up to you

You can get flat network cable but the round stuff is better.  It is supposed to be round to actually achieve the noise suppressing feature of twisted pairs of wires.  Technically the flat stuff doesn't meet the standards.  You could always use a different power supply for the ONT with a longer cable.  You just need one with a suitable output and the correct barrel jack for the ONT.

So my install dates have moved from 10 march, 17 march and now 7 April.

On 28 February they dug the road up and filled it in a few days later. They haven’t used the pull cord to pull the fibre to my house yet.

    Anyway, TBC

So my question. Under the new scheme, Vodafone handle the cancellation of virgin media.

VM sent me the packaging today, so I can return the router. And I had a VM bill credit on 12 march. My internet was still working yesterday when I checked.

So do I get free internet for a while?
Otherwise I would be paying VM double + the April increase (which I thought I had managed to avoid, starting this process in January!!)

p.s. Vodafone like to call me, what seams like weekly. Go through security, and then tell me nothing new. Takes longer to go through security than the actual point of the call. (Which I still haven’t figured out)
