Google photos is probably as good a starting point as any as it is available on PC, Mac, Android and iOS. Snapseed as mentioned above is an excellent app for phones. For more complex stuff and raw editing, then Gimp and Darktable, again as mentioned above, are your go tos for a PC.

Be aware (and further to my earlier post) that the current version of Darktable will not work as a plug in with the current version of Gimp! Both work fine stand alone but it does suggest that these capable but complex free apps are struggling to keep pace and are not being updated as keenly as they once were.

Apparently RAW Therapy (an even more complex free alternative to Darktable) will function in plugin mode with the current version of Gimp but I have not tested that myself.

What is the best free photo editing software?
I use Photofiltre (it's French but the interface is in English) .....it's more than capable for most people, doing basic stuff .....it's not photoshop or GIMP but it's easy to use and quick to learn.

The operation is simple and there are versions for most flavours of Windows.

Key question is: do you want to edit parts of an image....take a kilo off the waistline...
Only a kilo? I remember Corel Paint Shop Pro, with the 'thinnify' button. Marvellous!

    Best for what?

Platform - Windows, Mac, iOS, Android?

For Windows & quick tweaks to exposure/contrast/colour balance etc, Faststone Image Viewer is my go-to.

  • I'll just throw in here that the AI-powered photo editing powers now available on posh Samsung (and other) phones is a thing of wonder - and probably a complete anathema to anyone who wants to have maximum control over their pixels.

I still use Picasa despite it not having been supported for some years now. Google it and you will find a download.
