Proposing

I’m planning to propose to my girlfriend of 5 years. I’ve done the worst bit… asking her parents. They were delighted. I don’t see them on my own very often so had to quickly ask for their blessing whilst out shopping and my gf went to try clothes on!
Anyway, I said I have the ring but I’ve not decided when I’m going to do it yet as I want to take her completely by surprise. Do you think I should plan to get it done quickly now as I’ve asked the parents or do you think it still acceptable to wait a few months still?

    Congratulations!

I would do it quickly as her parents may sub-consciously act a little bit weird as they are in the know if that makes sense.

I didn't know prospective husbands still asked the prospective bride's Father for permission to marry.
I got married over 50 years ago and we just told everyone that we were getting married.

Here's the OP's other thread re choosing a ring:

As her family now know, I can't see why you would want to wait a few months.

Because since I met my gf she has always said she’d like her parents asked before proposing. So I have.
I don’t know why you see reason to link my other thread?
And to answer your question, in a few months we are planning on being on a weekend away so I am thinking of waiting until then to do it.

Honestly I don’t think they will.

My sister said she'd have turned down any man who'd asked our dad for 'permission', either before or asking her!

And my mum would have told my dad to say no if DH HAD asked.

But ... I suppose some people like to do things the old-fashioned way, and if you get on with her parents, it might be nice to know they're happy.

I'm not sure DS3 would have asked her father, but I think he was expected to meet her mother's side of the family and get approval from some of her Uncles.

Anyway, get a move on OP, don't wait for anything like Valentine's Day, because if you make a special fuss then it'll be less of a surprise.

I wouldn't think about it too much.  And it's pointless getting other people's opinions on it, as everyone is different.  If you're sure you want to spend the rest of your life with this person then get on and ask her.

As someone who has been married before, the romantic gestural things that happen prior to and during the wedding are faurly quickly forgotten when you have a mortgage, both working and are knee deep in nappies and tantrums

I asked my now wife's parents before I popped the question.

I’ve seen engagement proposals that have a videographer, photographer all primed, in a staged room covered in candles and rose petals. With the parents and in laws hidden in an adjacent room watching on video screen!

All depends on how elaborate you want it to be.
