What to do after credit card fraud?

Hello,

Last week, my credit card details were stolen, after I inadvertently entered them into a scam website that a QR code scanning app sent me to. Someone attempted to make an unauthorised payment today, but I cancelled my card & my bank will send a replacement.

On that scam website, I recall entering my first & last names, and an email address, but I don't remember what else I may have provided. What other things should I be doing to make sure that this problem doesn't go any further?

  • Hello,

    Unfortunately I don't think there is a great deal more that you can do other than report it to Action Fraud.  Here are few things to be aware of at the moment, on ocassion scam and sponsored websites can get a higher placement on Google than the genuine site. Just double check to ensure that the website you are on is genuine before entering your personal details:
    * QR codes on parking meters and in restaurants
    * Driving licence change of address (Free on gov.uk)
    * Renewal of car tax  (ensure you are on gov.uk)
    * Clean air zone charges

    If you start getting applications for stuff (unlikely given the info you said), a CIFAS protective marker will cover you for a couple of years

    Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

    People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    Thanks. What's the worst case scenario, i.e. what sort of things should I be preparing for, just in case I gave them more than a name & email address?

    The first thing to do is make sure your email is secured and make sure you have an absolutely unguessable secure password on your email account that is not used anywhere else

    I'd add 2FA to every account and login you have that supports it, ideally using an Authenticator app (Google, Microsoft, etc) - more secure than text messages, especially if the bad guys have your mobile phone number.
