Well if your injury means you can't go to a gym and it follows their t+c's them you're covered. But you may wish to pay 3 months membership to save the aggravation? It's not the MSE way however!

Sorry first time poster but I feel this is relevant.

Received the same leaflet on 2nd January and contacted Consumer Direct the same day.

I also contacted Consumer Direct, and they stated it was a complicated case so outside their remit, and raised it with Surrey Trading Standards on my behalf. Who are going to respond by the end of this week!

Why on earth didnt they just send us a letter saying if you pay yearly you can save 10% - which is what this change of T+C's is really about.

Make it a benefit rather than the bad publicity stunt this has become.

Actually you'd save over 11% if you paid for a year (10% of the DD total is the surcharge, not 10% addition to the premium).

11% flat rate, equates to a 20% odd APR, I think most DL members could easily get a 12 month loan for the annual fee at less than 20% APR, and save money. Money which HBOS (the new owners) wouldn't want to give up!

I think they were just hoping they could sneak this through, and no-one would notice!

Also as there is nothing in the T&Cs about how / when the monthly surcharge can go up, they can easily increase the cost to monthly paying members at a future date without breaking the RPI + 1% rule!

  • The 10% is inclusive and from what they told me, they have to tell us by law that it is part of the gym fee. In any case, I am going to leave the gym and get a stationary bike.
  • I joined DL 4 years ago when the family membership was £120 p.c.m. The current rate for the same package is £160 p.c.m. The recent changes announced will add another £16 p.c.m. This will bring my family membership to an eye watering £176 p.c.m. The option to pay £1920 in advance with the loss of interest is also very difficult to comprehend. I do not know of any private industry that makes such an unreasonable demand for payment.

No doubt DL will boast that the charges are justified aginst all the services on offer which still includes additional fees for tennis etc. My particular gym at Kidbrooke still has the same carpet and furniture installed by Crest Leisure 20 years ago! The showers are dirty, the Les Mills classes such as RPM are seldom available as advertised, the food menu is fatty and expensive, and the security system is slack. But we now have new bikes after years of putting up with bikes that were terrible.

I enjoy keeping fit but with no other alternative in my area, I have no choice but to accept what is available.

For once I did note the absence of the usual New Year rush, this time last year I could barely enter the gym, need I elaborate. Hopefully DL will see sense and withdraw from this kind of Highway Robbery.

My understanding is that the current package will remain at £160 pcm (I pay over £220 pcm) for you. However this now includes a £16 pcm monthly surcharge. If you choose to pay anually you'll instead only pay £1728 - i.e. 10% DISCOUNT!

The surcharge for paying monthly is the equivalent of over 20% APR - daylight robbery IMHO, and most MSErs would be able to borrow this sum for significantly less.

As previously stated, waiting on Trading Standards, who have now requested copies of contracts and joining paperwork!

  • I've just tried to downgrade my membership, as my tennis partners have decided to join the considerably cheaper JJB gym (even though it doesn't have courts !).

I was told my the membership advisor that this would result in me moving to the "new" member terms, and would then be on 12 months notice rather than my exisiting three.

Pointed out that this seemed both bizarre and unfair, and am now awaiting a response form the gym manager.

Anybod else had this problem ?

What does it say in your contract? It should say that you need to give 3 months notice... Surely you would have to sign a new contract if they were changing the notice period?
Our dream has come true... :D
  • I always used to pay annually as they used to give 10% off, plus vouchers to spend at the bar (about £50 worth), this went down to 10% the following year, then down to 5%... then this year I was told I might aswell go to monthly dd as no discount given for paying in advance...

Can someone clarify for a member who has been there for over 2 years (hence not affected by new 12month notice period) if I paid up front to save my 10% and decided to quit would I get a pro rata refund?
