  • I read this and quickly dmismissed it thinking it wasn't important really. I plan to leave in July as I'll be moving away, is this going to cause me any extra problems?

I may need to book a meeting with the membership manager ASAP.

  • Just spoke to somebody who informed me that the T&C applies to NEW Members Only.

Don't know how much he was telling the truth but hey. He said I need to give 3 months notice that I'm leaving in August, and that's fine! I shouldn't be charged any more till then either.

I originally joined end of may 2007

 well i was thinking about joining David Lloyds or Virgin but will certainly go with Virgin especially if i go with Pru Health as it will only be £25 not £60 per month. Even without pru health it is £60 but that is on a monthly contract.

    Thank you for the advice.

  • I just got off the phone with them and I was told that there was no increase in price and that it was a very badly worded letter. He also stated that it was merely a notification that out of the money I spend monthly for my membership, a portion of that is part of the direct debit charge.
  • Well, I just thought I'd write to thank everyone for their comments. It's great to know that someone has already contacted someone in relation to our consumer rights, although I'm not sure that DL would need to give 4 months notice before making any changes - since their original T&Cs state that they will give one month's written notice. Even still, they failed in that part, quite convincingly!

One final point - if this applies only to NEW members, then why did they send the letter to CURRENT members??? I doubt that this affects new members only - all current DL gym members need to talk to their gyms ASAP, I think, to show their anger at the way they've changed this.

If enough people talk to them, and no new members join up because of this unfair change, then it's only a matter of time before people vote with their feet and they're forced into reversing this...

    Hopefully...

In any event, we're out of there, notice has been handed to them, we have confirmation and a written receipt, let's see what happens now.

Good luck to you all, please let us know if you receive any other feedback from DL - and any new posters, please let us know what your experiences are.

    Thanks,

So does that mean that the monthly payments are inclusive of the 10% extra that they are making everyone pay, and that effectively, you would save 10% of your annual membership if you pay it in one go up-front?

In my opinion, that's the last thing that they wanted to say in their letter - I'd want to get anything from DL in writing, as it seems that they're saying different things to different people - and knowing their past record, anything they say that cannot be proved was not said at all...

If anyone can get anything in writing from them, please say so - effectively, I guess, it could be valid for everyone - as they can't have different rules for different people, just because one person has something written and somebody else doesn't...

I was confused by this bit

"The total premium amounts to 10% of your current Direct Debit payment. Your total monthly payment will from 1 January 2008 be calculated to include this premium, but this will not increase the total of your overall monthly direct debit payments or any future price increase that has previously been communicated"

But I think this makes sense now!?

They certainly WOULDNT get the crystalmark for that change of T+C's!

My question now is why tell us the 10% is included *free* in what we already pay?

    What does that achieve?

Some underlying ploy i'm not getting?
  • I was hoping to find a thread about this as i too recived the letter and thought it totally contradicted itself. I wonder what they class as a new member? I join in October and told them i would be moving away from the area in March, they said that was fine and that i would just have to give a months notice, i hope thats the case, guess i had better ask them tomorrow as if its gone up to 3 months i need to hand it in now, what a palava, i think the Pru health option is the way forward!

Why on earth didnt they just send us a letter saying if you pay yearly you can save 10% - which is what this change of T+C's is really about.

Make it a benefit rather than the bad publicity stunt this has become.
  • Hi,

Could someone help me with this one. I joined DL on 18th Jan 07 but got "tennis elbow" after a few months. I struggled on, getting physio and acupuncture, but finally sent a recorded delivery letter, along with a doctor's letter, cancelling my membership with immediate effect on 19th Sept.

The t&c's I signed said I could do this and not need to provide 3 months notice. However their acounts dept phoned and said their t&c's had changed but I was unaware of this. If I had know I would have given notice 3 months beforehand.

Now I've got a threatening letter from a debt collection agency. Any ideas as to what I should do? Does anyone know what the new t&c's say about ending membership due to injury?
