I agree with the points Soolin has covered. Also, you mention items under £20 which some would usually send untracked but (apparently) due to the changes FOR PRIVATE SELLERS ONLY “So therefore everyone will have to only send via tracked services which cost more to post.” This is a completely false statement. Nobody is insisting EVERYONE has to send items tracked. If you wish to send low value items untracked (as you may do currently) this will just mean your funds are released after 14 days. 14 days may seem like a while, but this is just a few pounds plus the cost of a stamp. This isn’t a significant sum of money we are talking about. Remember THIS POLICY ONLY APPLIES TO PRIVATE SELLERS and if you’re selling expensive items and sending them tracked etc then the chances are you should be using a business account anyway.
I'm a bit out of the loop as I generally use an RM account but I just sent a Tracked 48, up to 1kg parcel using Ebay post and it was £3.39. There doesn't seem to be a massive price hike using a tracked service with RM these days.
I received an item before Christmas from an Ebay seller and it wasn't tracked. When it arrived they'd used a more expensive untracked service. I think long term sellers may have been caught up in some older price structures and haven't checked out the prices and services Royal Mail and Ebay now offer.

Yes, RM24 is only a few pence more than first class and RM48 little more than second class.  As well as tracking the compensation limit is £150 rather than £20.

When it gets to 120 signatures it will be debated in the House of Commons and they will make eBay illegal or something.

I think it’s fine if sending a “parcel” , the price difference is small but if you’re sending something that could be Large Letter or even Letter then it’s a major difference .

You're right, that's true, certainly for 2nd class vs. RM48.  First class and RM24 are much closer in price
  • Ebay are trying to level up as Vinted already offer free listings, charge buyer fees and pay after delivery proof. Royal mail do not offer compensation for untracked items if they're missing. You have to send signed for if you wish to have up £20 compensation.

Nothing has changed for business sellers as they can sell much bigger quantities and values on a daily basis. not the odd item.

Untracked items you receive funds after 14 days as that is the timeframe that most items will be delivered within.

When you open a business account with eBay you have to wait until after delivery for funds until you get a review by eBay that deems you to be a good business seller, most will get this on their first review so it's not that long.

Ebay are also trying to stop business sellers using private accounts as unfortunately there are a number that do, some even advertise they are doing it. With the current and past rules businesses on a private account can undercut me considerably. Business sellers have had years of not getting ebay offers such as discounted selling fees that private sellers used to in the past before it was free to list. Private sellers still pay fees for any listings they choose to promote, as the promoted listings fees still apply as does the international transaction fee if you sell outside of the UK.

I also sell on my private account as I collect things and have been selling what I no-longer want or collect but to get round the waiting 14 days I will sell low value items as a job lot and send signed for or tracked 48 depending on sale price.

Just for clarification. All post signed or not signed has compensation if you have proof of postage. Standard post (letter, large letter and parcel ) has compensation up to £20, which is the same for signed for. RM48 RM24 and special delivery have higher limits.

RM, usually pay out item cost as value for private sellers but item cost for business sellers.

  • I have made many claims for items sent standard postage not signed for or tracked and all they have provided is 6 first class stamps. Royal mail told me over the phone before there is no way of proving something has not been delivered, unlike signed and tracked which they can check the scan location and last scan recorded, so they don't cover. I made a claim last year so it may have changed since or it had changed and the staff were not trained properly or made a mistake with my claim.

They require the proof of posting regardless of anything else as this will prevent anyone making a false claim when they have not posted anything.

I’ve been selling online for nearly 30 years and I’ve always had compensation. I did go through a period at least 10years ago when they were sending a book of 1st class stamps, I always questioned it and got a cheque if the lost item was worth more, but I used to sell some low cost items where a book of 1st class stamps was the same or even a little more than the item cost, and those I didn’t query.

If you are still being refused compensation even using their online portal (which is lightening fast) refer them to their own t and cs.
