@CapricornLass any chance you could get ordinary thermals and add your own stirrups? Ive not seen any with stirrups for ages, but it is nice to be warm. Not sure what you could use, tshirt material? Wide elastic? Cannibalise the old ones when they finally give up the ghost?CapricornLass said:What I would really really like is a pair of warm thermal leggings with stirrups.
I have a pair from M&S which are donkeys years old, which I use round the house and garden. They are corded and the knees are showing signs of wear, and the tummy panel wont remain stitched down, but they are so useful, and incredibly warm. I don't expect I shall ever find anything suitable that will replace them - but I live in hope!9 -
Well, I went looking for my stirrup pants. Didn’t find them, which makes me wonder if they were in the suitcase that went missing when we had all our stuff in storage years ago while renovating the house. What I did find was a length of dark blue flannel, probably wool, approximately 2m by 1.2m. Obviously a gift from the gods. I’m now wondering what to make with it.

@Diane1276, About the multithread wooden cotton reels. What a Great Aunt she must have been to donate all of those wooden reels for the children. We built towers and castles with them. They would be threaded on string for necklaces, for pull-along caterpillars for toddlers, and for puppets. With four wire nails tapped in they would be used for French knitting.

For boys they were the wheels for model steam rollers and trains, for windmills and pulleys, and best of all for wind up tanks. The tanks went with the model soldiers for WW1 battles.

I must admit I hadn't thought about adding my own elastic stippups. I will give that some consideration. Thanks.
There used to be a Ladybird book which was full of things to make, many of them using old cotton reels. I made a snake from a ball and old cotton reels, painted green and yellow, for my youngest sister for Xmas. It was really loved as a toy for many years. I was about 10 at the time.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

@Nelliegrace, those photos brought back memories! I wish manufacturers would bring back wooden reels too - better for the environment, surely, and still with the potential to make toys. I certainly had a French Knitting 'loom' made from a cotton reel, and the 'tank' is familiar, too. I might have a think about making some of those with my granddaughters - we could have races! While I do have wooden cotton reels, having rescued a stash when clearing my Mum's house, I'll look around for a modern alternative rather than use them in the first instance.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Oooh I remember making both of those!!!!! Early 80s variant of the tank with an upturned yoghurt pot over it so rather than being a tank it was like a sort of dalek type thing!Nelliegrace said:@Diane1276, About the multithread wooden cotton reels. Thankfully not on ration points yet, though I should probably be mindful of what I get now, so I'm not causing issues next year! I am hoping to get at least one knitting top and start a two piece for next year. I've already decided on my colours and yarn for the knitted top (doing the ladys jumper with chevron strips) but unsure about the two piece, would really like colourwork! Though whilst I don't think it's true 40's could be tempted by doing a vest with matching cardigan, as a two piece as I have a couple of colourwork vests I want to do.

Sigh! We redecorated DS3's room last week, as he's now renting a nice flat in his university city & has removed nearly all his belongings, and that's the best room to be a guest room. It was a far bigger job than we'd thought; we had to strip off several layers of wallpaper & assorted paints, and discovered lots of different wall surfaces underneath, some of them in a pretty parlous state. Somehow we got it done before DS1, DDiL & baby arrived on Thursday, but it's cost me two pairs of joggers! The navy blue ones, which I wasn't fond of, just completely vanished, so I had to wear the black ones, and of course I did get white paint on them... a trip to my favourite couturiers at the recycling warehouse only dredged up a few very sad items, so today I bit the bullet & ordered 2 new pairs, having found some all-cotton ones after much digging around. 12 coupons added. Off now to catch up!
ETA: it's believed that my navy blue joggers got thrown out by OH, who thought they were a pair of his that had somehow shrunk! He's 6'2", I'm 5'4"...Angie - GC Oct 25: £467.21/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)12 -

Arrgghhhh!!!!!! @Thriftwizard, I think your DH should donate you his coupons for your new joggers. I’m surprised he’s not stuck in the stocks on the village green with a bag of half-dead vegetables available to pelt him with.

Pip, I've made all the half-dead vegetables into soup; that's all we'll be eating after feeding the 5,000 this weekend...Angie - GC Oct 25: £467.21/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)9
