I popped into a YBS branch with the intention to apply for the £50 branch saver. The place was deserted, just two staff manning the counters. I was told the next appointment for applying for this account was at 13:00 today. I left without the account and won’t be going back for it.
Unless certain staff are trained to open accounts and were away out of sight with customers in offices, then that is ridiculous!
If there's cash around in my experience banks and BS' require at least two people to keep an eye on it and each other so I'm not surprised they were unwilling to help.

Something you just explained very clearly., which they notably didn't do.
  • I think it's generally accepted that there will always be "cash around" in any branch of a building society.
If the society isn't aware of that, and the fact that during opening hours someone might want a product, there is something seriously wrong at Board level.

YBS accept debit card payments, so why they wouldn’t allow the poster to open the account without an appointment so long as they would deposit that way or by cheque or faster payment (whatever non cash methods they accept) is beyond me.

The branch hasn’t carried out many/any transactions if the staff are manning empty counters and turning people away, which in turn means it is more likely to be earmarked for closure and the staff out of a job.

I could understand the insistence on an appointment if the account were in high demand, but at 6% variable and with a £50 limit, that’s hardly likely.

I think it might be the already deposited cash that has to have oversight of more than one employee..

I think they have a safe for that purpose

I have opened many accounts in branch, generally when there is only 2 staff you get one stay on a till and the other comes round the front to open. I have always made it clear to the assistant that if they need to leave me to help their colleague or clear a queue, I have no issue with that. To date I have found this approach has worked in every case.

Interesting, hope they don't drop the 7% rates too soon!
