Money Moral Dilemma: Should we give my in-laws the flight cancellation compensation we claimed?

It’s a no brainer. The in laws paid for the holiday, they are entitled to the compensation.4

yes. You shouldn’t even be asking. Just do it.4

Of course you should as you were happy to get a free holiday. I suppose you want the free holiday and the compensation!!3

We need to do some simple maths here. You refer to 'kids' so we can assume there were at least two kids. There are the two in-laws, you and your spouse, and at least two kids. £520 x 6 = £3120. (Plus another £520 per any more kids). How much did the in-laws pay for this holiday? If it was less than the amount of compensation you received, then reimburse them for whatever they paid for the holiday and keep the balance for you and your family. Does this sound a fair resolution?3

No question about it - if the holiday cost you nothing why should you benefit and not them. Hand it over and smile.

It’s a tricky situation. On one hand, if they wanted the compensation, they should have put in the effort to get it themselves. On the other hand, they did pay for the holiday, so they did you a favour there.
I’d view it as them doing you a favour initially, and now you’re sort of repaying part of that favour. If you hadn’t put in the work, they wouldn’t have received a penny, and they were clearly okay with that at the time. So, I don’t think they’re automatically entitled to the money—that’s why I’d frame it as partially paying them back for helping you out.
That said, I doubt you’ll get this viewpoint through to them, so I wouldn’t bother trying to explain it. Just consider the total amount they paid for the holiday after you give them the compensation as what they contributed toward your trip.
Or, if you don’t want to overthink it, just pay them back and move on.

Of course you should give it to them , how ungrateful are you after a lovely paid for holiday.5

Your in laws paid for the holiday, for which part of that payment was reimbursed, it belongs to them. Yes you applied for it, but I’d think of it as applying on their behalf because they deserve compensation for having bought a service and not received it as intended. Yes, you were inconvenienced, but what’s a little inconvenience in exchange for a free holiday?5

Yes - your parents-in-laws paid for the trip so they should get all the money. By giving them all the money, your parents-in-law *might* give you some back. Just do the honest thing.4

Applying for the compensation is hardly a big deal, easy enough procedure for which i would not expect a payment. Of course you should give them the compensation and be thankful for the holiday they bought you6
