  • ive seen this on the bbc site, about new tariffs must be offered with no standing charges
surely enough the price per unit will shoot up, ideal if the house is going to be empty or going onto all electric

yes the unit price will be higher but if you aren't using much / place is empty or unused then it may turn out to be cheaper. I have a holiday flat I use at weekends only - in the summer during the week all that is on is the fridge / freezer - and gas consumption is minimal for months - consumption overall is low and hence such a tariff may be better.

TOU tariffs should have s/c's much lower or zero because they are helping the Grid from overloading

Ofgem set the rules. It sounds as though they might change them.
If they change the rules re. how the cap is implemented, or how suppliers are charged for their customers, suppliers will be able to offer zero standing charge tariffs.

Years ago I had a no standing charge on my gas because it only supplied hot water. My bill was about £5 per month. When the 'no standing charge' option was removed and I had to start paying it my bill jumped to £16 a month.
In my current house I have solar panels and in summer my imported electricity is close to zero but I'm still paying a bill consisting entirely of standing charge
People should be offered the choice

We too used to enjoy the benefit of a no standing charge tariff for gas as at the time it was only used for cooking, and so we used almost nothing. At the point that SC's became inevitable, my monthly payments quadrupled. I suspect the problem with this will be stopping people playing the system with switching tariffs during the summer, and then back in the winter, and it will be interesting to see what Ofgem put in place to prevent that.

Yes, but you don’t pay a SC on your exports, you still need a connection to the grid, so they will probably reduce your export rate by say another 8p .

They are still connected to the grid and should contribute to it's upkeep. Their reward is paying very little for their energy if the ToU tariff us used properly.
