Balance transfer - a stupid question

Hi all, this is a very stupid question I’m sure but one that I can’t find an answer to definitively elsewhere sorry.
I’m looking to help my sisters debt problem by doing a balance transfer from multiple credit and store cards to a 0% balance transfer card.
She currently has 2 credit cards and 2 store cards all with high interest rates. Can I balance transfer from all 4 accounts into this single card? Or can we only transfer from one to the new card?

As far as I know you can move all the balances to the new card to save the interest. I have moved balances over the years, as I'm sure you have from the sounds of things.

Whilst others on here may be very helpful, I would suggest you check with the card company directly but I cant see why you wouldn't be able to.

Also I'd add, its a nice thing to help your sister.

It may depend on the BT card.  I recently moved two seperate cards onto on 0% fee/interest BT card (RBS), and the conditions made it clear that was welcome/expected.

Many providers will not take store cards for balance transfers.

  • In principle yes, you can transfer from as many cards as you like - as long as you have enough credit limit on the BT card available, of course.
Some cards won't accept transfers from store cards, but it's easy enough to check with them first (most of them have a list on their website showing cards they'll accept balances from).
Also, be aware that you can't usually transfer from another credit card that's owned by the same group (for example, I do know that the M&S card is owned by HSBC, so you can't transfer between those two).
Remember to factor in the balance transfer fee if applicable.
Finally, it's not clear from your post, but are you considering transferring your sister's debt onto a card held in your name?  If so, there may be a slight issue with doing the transfer, as some cards won't transfer balances from a card in someone else's name - though, anecdotally, it's not a problem if you do the balance online rather than over the phone.  But do remember that if this is the case, then the debt becomes 100% your responsibility - if any payments are missed, it's your credit file that takes the hit.
