If you hit CTRL and a link, you should expect a new tab to open, not a new window.

Here's how to have new windows and pop-ups to default to new tabs:
    • 1. Open IE7
      2. Click Tools
      3. Click Internet Options
      4. Click Settings
      5. Select Always open pop-ups in new tab
      6. Click OK until you are back in your browser
You can hold CTRL and click on a link to test. If setup correctly, that should open the link in a new tab instead of in a new window.

Yes, but that does not work in 100% of cases; sometimes it opens a new window. It is true that tabs on IE7 has greatly reduced the inconvenience of these small windows but it's still annoying that the smaller size happens at all.

I'll try out these other options people are suggesting. Thanks all.

Well the obvious answer is to stop using Internet Explorer and use a proper browser! There are plenty of other alternatives to choose from that don't have these weird problems.

    ;)

Open Internet Explorer to a web page.
Click on a link that opens a new window ( not tab).
    Close original IE window.
Resize remaining window to the size that you want
Select File and while holding down the Ctrl key click on exit.

Haven't done this for a while so don't know if it still works.

Open up the first window which should be normal size. Open the new ( linked or otherwise ) window which will be the small one.

Resize manually be dragging out from the corner until it's the size you want it. Close the first opened window and then close the second, manually resized window.

After that the linked window should open at whatever size you chose when you manually resized it.

I just tried this out again and it does work fine.

You must close the resized window LAST for it to work.

Which is what I described in Post 9 except you don't need to use Ctrl X - just X will do fine.

After getting very annoyed that I couldn't fix the problem (resizing and closing windows didn't work), I've changed the settings so that a link will now open in a new tab instead of a new window.

This hasn't solved the original problem but has given me a solution that stops me screaming at my tiny windows boxes!! lol

Thanks for all your advice and if you find some other way that may work, please let me know as I'd love to find out!:D

In the mean time, some success.

I dragged Notepad out to full screen size then did CTRL + click X. It now opens full screen. So the method appears to have fixed that. :j

With IE7 the same methods have produced more mixed results. I did drag an IE7 window out to full size (- I think I was online when I did that). Currently if I seek to access the net by double-clicking on the IE7 shortcut (the properties of this do not have any shortcut tab or Run box, so I must be missing something) on my desktop my home page (currently set to Google) does open in full screen mode. However, if instead of that I go via Start/Favourites/website I then get the smaller-sized window.

So the problem is mostly fixed but not entirely. I'll try dragging another window out to full size while online to see if that makes any further difference. And I'll try the latest suggestions.

Surely Microsoft could provide a better full solution for this annoyance? But espresso may well be right!

    Thanks again for everyones suggestions.

    Seems to be fixed!

I followed the advice given above:

    1) Accessed a site via Start/Favourites. This gave a window in the smaller size.

    2) Clicked on a link, one that I knew would open in a new window (despite IE7).

    3) Clicked on Maximise for first window.

    4) Dragged new window to full size.

    5) Used both windows to do some surfing, in both instances opening new tabs within the two windows.

    6) Each tab was closed as I finished with it except the original tab of the second window, leaving the two windows each with one tab.

    7) Clicked on the X to close the original window.

    8) Used Ctrl + click on X to close the second window. (Don't know if it would work without using Ctrl).

    9) Now it seems to start at full size no matter whether originally accessed via Start or IE shortcut. :j :j :j
